I wanted to share the odd laundry system we fell into recently.
Just before Christmas, my dryer broke. I struggled to get a repair man here when I could be home and then decided to put it off until January. In the meantime we started washing all our clothes on one day and that night taking bags and bags of wet clothes to the laundry mat to dry. I have a double capacity washer, but I can fit 2 wash loads into one of these dryers. It takes $0.80 to dry a load in 22 minutes. Then my dd and I sort/fold/hang everything at the laundry mat. We are in and out in about an hour. When I get home, my older boys bring it all in and put everything away, except my dd's, which she handles.
I have always struggled with clothes, clean and dirty, everywhere. This has been wonderful for me. No more piles of clean clothes in baskets waiting to be dealt with, no more mountains of dirty being kicked around the laundry room. For the first time in years, I am caught up on laundry, even the socks are matched!
The other pleasant surprise came yesterday with the gas bill. I spend $36.00 at the laundry mat this month, and my gas bill was $110 dollars less than last months. It has been cold here in northern Illinois, so to get a gas bill of under $125 was shocking!
I would never have thought of doing the laundry this way, but its working for us.

That's great you're finding something that's working for you.
I know a woman who has neither washer nor dryer in her house because she prefers the speed of the laundromat!

We used to go to the laundromat during times of illness, after a vacation, when our house was for sale or during a move. It's really a great time-saver, especially if you have helpers. Glad it worked so well for you LeeAnn!

I have a friend who does the laundry that way! Washes at home, dries at the laundry mat. She has an electric dryer, I'll have to tell her that her method may be saving money! That would make her accountant husband so happy!

You can't beat letting so many machines work for you at the same time!
It reminds me of when I was in college - a friend and I would bum a ride to a laundromat (it was cleaner than the laundry room at school) and then do the laundry of the people who provided transportation (usually guys, of course).
It would be interesting to figure out whether it is actually cheaper to use the coin-fed dryers than an electric dryer at home. With our electric rates, I think it would be a close call.

That's fascinating, I can see how that works on many levels. Are you planning on continuing?
Wouldn't work here though, the laundromats are expensive, I think $2 a load and not that big machines really.

I couldn't wash and dry at the laundry mat. The washers are $5 a load  But a weeks worth of laundry fits in 5 dryers at for $4 total. I go to the laundry mat on Friday night, and usually its just my dd and I there.
My dryer is going to be $300 to fix, so for the foreseeable this will be our system.

I don't think I could dry at the laundromat either.. a weeks worth of laundry here well.. the laundromat isn't all that big.. and I don't think it dries that fast either..
I'm looking forward to when the weather works for hanging stuff on the lines again.. I plan for every other load to be stuff that goes on the line well.. so that I wash a load and put it in the dryer, and wash another load and put it on the line.. gives the dryer enough time to get the load done before I use it again.. and the line is almost that fast in the summer.. which means I can do laundry almost twice as fast. I would love to get a second dryer for my house

I do my laundry like Jodie when the weather permits ...right now it would be ice laundry though according to the Amish 3 days on the line and it'll be dry  freeze dried Annie

Unfortunately, clotheslines are not allowed in my subdivision. One of many by-laws we weren't informed about prior to purchasing our house  Not that I could line dry right now, as it is well below freezing here. I used to hang dry in the basement with a big fan blowing, but my husband said the clothes smelled like "basement" and wouldn't wear them.

Just thought I'd throw in that we found a beautiful used dryer, only 7 yrs old, already converted for propane(an at least $20 cost) for $80 on Craig's List. Our dryer set fire(thankfully nothing worse than damage to an already quite old dryer, Harvest Gold in color if that tells you anything). You might be able find an affordable newer option for less than the repair of your broken dryer?
Mom and I actually used to have fun doing the laundry like you and dd are doing it right now, it brings back fond memories of times when I lived there.   But, now I have a sweet dd to do laundry with, and she is an industrious little thing. We have clothelines in a portion of our living room, from dh's bachelor days (not just strung bachelor style though. They actually are strung with nice wooden hangers from the ceiling which I totally can't describe right now!  ) , and dd went right to work hanging laundry to dry after the dryer fire. I was kinda bummed when the dryer went kaput, I had just started laundry catch up, but then I said to dh I was so grateful that we have clotheslines right in our living room, how many people have that?
