what do you feed your babies and when do you give them their first food? Since we are trying to shift to a much reduced grain diet, I am not sure I want to feed my nearly 7 mo old rice cereal like I fed my others. Just wondering how you handle your babies' first mealtimes.

I really like the list in Dr Sears, The Baby Book
ah ha.. found it online.. they have a wonderful website.
Feeding at a Glance
It gives you the lists of foods split up over the ages.. which for me is easy to basically start at the top with the types of foods.. So you can see that something like avacados would be a good first food.. it's easily mashable.. has good for you fats etc.

I agree with Jodie. Dr. Sears, The Baby Book, is an excellent resource for giving you good suggestions for first foods. ... though not every baby is ready for solid foods at 6 or 7 months. On average, my girls were much more interested in solid foods right around 10 months or so, so up until then I'd give them an opportunity to experiment, but really, nutritionally speaking, breastmilk is all that they needed.

more nutrient dense foods are meats and dairy. I tend to give my kids tastes from my plate when they are reaching for it....usually around 9-10 months they are able to use their fine motor skils to pick things up.
whole milk yogurt and veggies are usually more palatable for my kiddos. My first child wouldn't gag down the rice cereal and we have never tried with the other four.

I love the book "Super Baby Food".
I have never done rice cereal--ever.
We start with sweet potatoe, then banana, then spinach or green beans, squash, carrots, avocado, peas... (we try to alternate a binding food with a less binding food to avoid constipation). We do not introduce fruits (aside from banana) for almost 4 mos. Our ped said it is best to not introduce "Sweet" fruits so as to not develop a sweet tooth. Don't know the validity to that...but made sense to me.
We start a bit on the late side here...I think around 8 mos for my dd and around 11 mos for my ds (though, I think that was too late).

We too started solids late, never did rice cereal, and I think I remember doing veggies first--with an occasional fruit thrown in. With my oldest we started somewhere after 6 months. My younger, probably 8 months but for her, food was a plaything and she really never got into it until after 1 year!
Oh yeah, and nursed a long time

All of mine began getting small amounts of solid food at around 4 months. This seemed to be "child lead", as at that age they would strain toward the food that someone else was eating, really focus in on the spoon, make mouth movements that suggested they wanted to eat what others were eating. The solids were a very minor part of their diet at that age, like maybe a tablespoon a day.
We did use some baby cereal, but not very much/often because I am completely grossed out by it. Actually, they didn't start on specifically baby food - more like smooth, unsweetened applesauce, smashed banana. The gradual move to more and different table food came as they were ready for finger food - things like peas, blueberries, green beans, mashed potatoes (which are, to a little one, finger food )
Peace,
Nancy

I've never used the super smooth foods..
My oldest would spread smashed banana around but not want to eat it, she would refuse applesauce etc. Out of curiousity and recognizing the things she would eat.. I gave her small cut up pieces of banana and made homemade chunky applesauce and she loved both.
So I've always skipped that step altogether.
Another early food we love here is refried beans.. for the older baby but I think Dr Sears lists it in the 7-9 mo age.

ok, so at the risk of sounding completely disgusting, I'll tell you what I do...I have a 7 month old and I have always(for all my babies) chewed what ever I was eating for a meal and then put it in the baby's mouth! I know, it's gross! when I first started having kids my Abuelita(old fashioned & grew up dirt poor but somehow knew what she was doing) was the one who told me to do this turns out my (natural-remedies,fish-oil-loving,) pediatrician told me to do this too! he says the enzymes in our saliva help to break down the food making it easier for the baby to digest. I never do this for spicy foods but it works great for introducing meats a bit at a time. One other cool thing is that it completely grosses out my teens...makes for an interesting mealtime
