So.. can the awful fading that is done on purpose nowadays be fixed so the garment looks normal if you find something you like at a thrift shop? You know the kind of fading fromt the thighs down on a skirt, or on the rear?

use a color remover and then dye the garment? Since I'm not sure how they make that effect, I'd want to use the color remover.. but if it's just color on color.. like dying faded black pants black.. I just do the dye not the remover.

That's exactly what I was going to mention.
I've done 1 of 2 things with good success...with one garment which was REALLY inexpensive, I just added a cup of bleach to the wash and the whole thing came out faded more. It was very casual anyway, so I like that.
Another option is to use the RIT dye Jodie suggests. You can find it at the grocery store; it's VERY inexpensive and works very well! You can either use RIT color remover or bleach the garment first, and then soak in a RIT navy color to add back the color of the denim. You'll want your dh to do some of this for you, Pilgrim. There is a good bit of powder dust that comes up into the air as you're adding the powder to the wash, and I'd be very careful inhaling any of that while pregnant. But once he gets the dye in the machine and in the water it would be fine.

you can get RIT dye in liquid and you don't have that dust in the air..
I also want to try the Dylon fabric dyes. I've heard good things about those.

I really like the Dylon dyes. Good color coverage, and stays bright wash after wash.

Thank you all for the tips and info! I'm going to check out the Dylon dyes. I have used RIT before, and the color did not stay as well as I would have liked in spite of using the tips such as vinegar and such to help set the dye.
Thanks for the tip on the powder Jen, I'll make sure to wear dh's respirator mask if I do powder stuff like that.
