Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am looking for help finding what would make up different "typical" gardens in Europe...What is usual in UK, Germany, Italy, France, Poland, Greece, or any other European country....flowers, shrubs, veggies, fruit, trees, ...

We are covering Europe this year for our geography, and I started wondering about how folks in other countries garden. Then I went on a house and garden tour this past weekend, and I decided to make it part of our study.

I wasn't sure that this neccesarily was a geography question, so I went here. Please move if needed.

"Typical" -- as in upper class, middle class?

Current type of gardens or historical?

I guess middle class, or "regular" folk gardens, what you might find in an average neighborhood, nowadays.

For instance, I remember when I was very young (4 or 5) going to my great aunt and uncle's house, and we always had to check out my Uncle Otto's garden. All I can recall was it was a vegetable garden, not which ones, and he had a very green thumb! He was German, but I don't know if that was typical for Germans or not. I recall little if any flowers growing.

In Germany, you will find many flowers in a garden, even if the family has only an apartment balcony. Many communities have a place outside of town where you can also grow vegetables in a garden plot for family use. This is very popular. Fruit trees are prized.

French gardens are lovely. I've spent a lot of time in French municipal gardens (planned and tended to by the town government) and they are filled with flowers and trees in combinations that are different - but pretty. In Strasbourg I saw a bed of purple salvia, orange marigolds and light pink begonias...now I plant that combo in my own front flower beds each year.

Italian gardens are more container-oriented (it gets hot in the southern part of Italy and even northern Italian summers are warm). Red geraniums are very popular - all geraniums are, but especially red ones. Again, many people live in apartments with balconies and you'll see a profusion of geraniums in long rectangular containers hanging over the sides. City-dwellers in the south try to obtain a family garden plot outside of town - our friends had a bit of land, where they raised fruit, veggies and chickens, and where they had a big room and indoor pizza oven. On festive Sundays they'd invite us over and make 11 kg of pizza dough - the whole family showed up - and we'd feast and talk and sing...life in an Italian garden!
