I'm giving myself a little pat on the back. Yesterday I got rid of tons of those annoying plastic storage containers.

This has been a gradual transition, because I didn't have the cash outlay to replace everything right away. I needed two different kinds of containers: leftover storage for the fridge and then to-go containers for leftovers for dh to heat up at work.

For the refrigerator, I've been buying some vintage Pyrex refrigerator glass containers. I look around at antique malls and thrift stores and never pay much for them. There are three different sizes. There are different colors, but mainly I keep finding these.

I know that Pyrex has a current line of refrigerator dishes...I just find buying used is more fun and economical.

And for those that reheat in microwaves, the Pyrex goes from fridge to microwave with no problems.

For carrying containers, I found in Marshall's and in my grocery store Snapware Glasslock containers. These are leakproof, which is really important. Dh removes the plastic lid and heats in microwave, and so has hot lunches.

What I don't know what to do is freezing food storage, like batches of soup and stews? Meals to freeze? Not sure what works well for this. Any suggestions? (doesn't have to be glass, just anything that keeps from freezer burn).

I didn't know they had them. Good to know! I was testing out the glasslock a piece at a time, because I wasn't sure it was "travel-worthy".

We use leftover jars- canning jars or just glass jars from pasta sauce, sauerkraut etc. Just give a good amount of headspace if they go into the freezer! My husband takes them to work with leftovers too- just use the widemouth ones. They are great for leftover storage in the fridge too, as you can always see (hopefully) whats in them.

Thanks for these ideas! I'm down to just a few plastic containers, but have been putting off replacing them. Tupperware is just too expensive for me, and I don't like the idea of BPA and pthylates leaching into our food. I also love that glass doesn't stain, so I'll know for sure that my containers are truly clean.

and glass goes in the dishwasher! I hate washing plastic stuff by hand, not that I mind handwashing but it gets pitted easily and then stains, etc.

I *hate* plastic too.

We save jars -- I esp. love uniquely shaped jars like hexagons, etc.

I also have a couple of Frigoverre pieces that we got in Italy. I've found them sometimes at TJMaxx. Hubby also got me a set of Pyrex glassware with lids. And I've been eyeing the ones at Costco but haven't made a decision yet.

I've tried stainless steel bowls, Jenn, but I no longer have the lids for them and use plastic and foil now. Doesn't work very well for me.

Stephanie,

One of my friends sells Tupperware, and she said that they've been BPA-free and pthylate-free for awhile now. I consider them to be the safest, but I don't have in depth knowledge of all the plastic containers out there.

I also use alot of our extra porcelain cereal bowls and such for leftovers and just put a plate on top- works until you have too many leftovers and not enough for a place setting!

I bought a set at Costco a few weeks ago. I really like it and the lids snap on quite well.

I try not to use plastic to store food in although I do still use my Tupperware. But I try to never put any plastic in the microwave.

I use canning jars, the wide-mouthed variety. You can buy a package of 8 white screw-on reusable plastic lids for that size canning jar. I bought mine several years ago at our hardware store for $2.00.
