I wanted to make fabric shaped wooden shoes to sew on my girls' skirts (or shirts.) What's the best way to go about this?

I was planning to cut the shape from fabric which I ironed to fusible interfacing. Then cut the shape and sew to skirt.

How do I make my edges of my wooden shoe look finished?

Is there a better way to do this?

There is stuff.. rather than interfacing.. you iron the applique to it.. and then peel off a backign and iron it onto the item you want it on.. not sure what it's called.. or even if it's still made.. I'l go look in a few and see if I still have some to get the name.. but it's much better than interfacing. To finish the edges you would probably want to do an applique stitch around the edges. But this looks pretty nice as it is. I've used it for patching little girl's skirts.

Thanks Jodie for the recommendation.
Do I have to turn my fabric edges over and then stitch?
If I don't turn the edges over, will fraying occur?
Or does this bonding product take care of fraying?

I found that this held very well on a skirt.. it was torn.. one of those corner type tears.. on a chambrey skirt.. I cut a heart out of a pretty light blue with tiny flowers and used that over the tear and didn't finish it with the applique stitch and never had any fraying. But it probably doesn't have that finished look that the applique stitch gives.. especially if it's soemthing you want to showcase.

I'll see if I can pick up some Heat and Bond tomorrow.

I had some left over fabric from All Saints Day. We didn't use it. It's blue wavy fabric with yellow stars. My son said it reminded him of Wynken, Blynken and Nod. I'm trying to decorate the simple skirts (or shirts -- we'll see which looks better) with a wooden shoe shape. Isn't this fun?

My daughter said that we need three little bears in the shoe. (The illustrated version we have of this poem has three little bears or is it a bunny. I"m going to have to check.) Maybe these are at the craft store as well?

Anyway, I have four of these skirts for my little girls. It'll be fun to say,
Put on your Wynken, Blynken and Nod outfits.

Sounds so sweet, Helen.

I use the same thing Jodie does. It holds pretty well without needing to stitch around the edges--which is good for me, as every time I try to do an applique stitch around something small it ends up looking terrible. But I will occasionally do a straight stitch very close to the edge of the applique if it's the kind of thing that's going to take a lot of wear and tear, just to be sure. Anyway, I'm sure the skirts will be adorable!

This does sound absolutely adorable!!!! What a great idea and frugal use of fabric, Helen. Inspiring.

I have used the Heat Bond stuff as well and think it will work well. If you're sewing multiple shoes on multiple skirts, I'd go for the iron and wash method sans applique...but maybe I'm being lazy. It would probably look adorable with a little applique stitching around the edges!

They'll be precious!!! Wish I could send you some of my pretty calico stash for dressing up more skirts and shirts! Think of the fun you could have with flowers or hearts!! I could just envision how pretty a sunflower would look, or a Morning Glory with a little embroidered vine trailing...

With the lovely weather over the weekend, my children enjoyed playing outside. I had a chance to work on my applique.

The shirts I bought have casual pleats around the neck. Oops! I couldn't iron the wooden shoes there. I had to put them towards the bottom on the side. Not exactly what I had envisioned.

I ended up sewing the appliques. I practiced a few times on extra wooden shoes to get my stitching even and close to the edge. The Heat n Bond I bought said not to sew it. The package instructions said there is another Heat n Bond for sewing. Oh well.

They didn't turn out as fantastic as I had imagined but nothing ever does. The kids think they're fun. I think they're fun. That's what counts!

Helen, I missed this thread before.

When I learned to applique, the process was

1) cut item out

2) Iron on with fusible "stitch-witchery" (show my age)

3) Then outline the applique with zig-zag stitch by machine.

The last step makes it look professional and the edges won't ravel.
