big bulky winter coats when you have no coat closet?
Yep, you heard it right...NO coat closet. And minimal use of the closet in the girls room (we have a functional dresser pushed in there to make room for the bunk beds...looks cute but no extra room) and only a hang up spot in the boys room. I do believe a bedroom with no closet is called a den.
I am firmly convinced that the man who built this house had:
1. NO children
2. NO clothing!
Soo..I have a walk up attic and we put some hooks in there going up the stairs, but the coats are so bulky they end up falling down or being thrown across a chair by its door  UNLESS...I found a new hanger thingy for them....hmmm
I did think of the rooms, but we are so short of storage space, I don't want to make it seem more cluttered than necessary and there isn't anything sufficient for a family of nearly 10 near the front and back doors.
Ideas?
I am trying to identify some of my frustration hot spots and come up with remedies. This is a job for someone ultra creative. Oh! What I could do with more space!
(My Mom says that I would only have more to clean if I had a bigger home..to which I responded..."That would be GREAT because everything would have a PLACE to GO and it would clean itself!!
Watch out, the morning sickness is wearing off....
(insert sinister laugh here, kids! )

I have hooks on the wall behind the front door.. and yes I have to pick up coats at times.. but what really helps is most of them have a loop inside the collar so that you're not hanging bulk over the hook.. but slipping this loop over the hook which keeps things on much better than trying to hook the whole collar or hood over the hook.. you can make those on things without them by sewing a bit of ribbon by the ends to the coat collar.

I was thinking hooks to. Or what about buying a piece of dowel (maybe a broom handle thickness for the weight) and screwing it up somewhere, perhaps in the laundry. (Do Americans have laundries?) I think you call them mud rooms or basements??

A long row of Shaker pegs in the hall. Those things hold coats very well and they look nice, too, I think.

I agree with the pegs or hooks and to maximum wall space, stagger their height and make at least two rows, even three. The lowest hooks are great for the youngest ones to reach easily. If there's truly no room for even that, then maybe utilize the back of some doors with those over the door hooks. Some of them don't look too bad and with the door open, the coats almost disappear.

I say move south!
We don't even use our coat closet for coats. I don't think it would be anygood for coats size wise anyway, it is more like a vacuum cleaner garage.
We don't have "coats" per se.
Just a few jackets .
If it gets cold, noone leaves the house, anway down here.
God forbid we get ice/snow - they shut down the state 
One year we got snow (we lived in OK that year) and my husband had the kids outside with socks on their hands!

We keep our coats in the car! We leave through the garage so everyone always took them off as soon as they got into the car anyway, or they didn't "think" to bring one because they didn't have to go out in the cold. Then when we arrived at our destination someone was always without a coat. Now the rule is don't bring your coat into the house so you have it when we are out. When they go out to play they go through the garage anyway to get bikes, balls, whatever, so it is easy to get coats and put them back. Hope this helps!

We live in Maryland so it doesn't get that cold, and the garage is warmer that the outside (love all that heat leaking out of the house!). But by the time we drive wherever we are going, the coats are room temperature from being in the heated car. It's funny but I never thought about the coats being cold before so I guess it hasn't been a problem.

yeah it doesn't sound like it is.. our garage stays above freezing.. barely but we can't park in there.. 15 passenger vans just don't fit.. and I'm imagining going out to the van some morning when it's 7*

Hooks. In the summer they go in hockey bags hanging by hooks in the basement.

We live in an older home without closets,too. We have some pegs and hooks behind the door. We also have some hooks on the basement door as things were getting crowded behind the door in the front room.
I think I actually prefer hooks like this to the shaker pegs because things stay on a little better, even without a loop, as well as being able to put a bag or lighter jacket under a bigger coat. The top hook also holds hats well. These are the hooks we have up high on the basement door for dh and my coats as well as lower for the play coats (actually on the back of the back door in the kitchen).
I've also experimented with pegboard on our porch. As it got colder, the coats moved back to the indoor jumble, but pegboard is nice and flexible and easy to use different hooks and label for everyone's individual pieces.

In our previous house we had no coat closet so we used a coat tree --basically lot of hooks on a pole. Everyone was able to hang their coat easily.
Our current home has a closet but it does get crowded so I bought an over the door set of hooks to help alleviate the load.
One of the things I most look forward to in the Spring is putting all those coats away!

Hey! We do hooks here, too!!!! 
We hung our hooks on the ascending wood trim of the stairs in our front hallway - our stairs are all exposed. Does this make sense? It's hard to describe. We hung one hook down low enough for the 2 yo and then each ascending stair riser got another hook. It's easy to tell who gets which hook this way.
I like big strong hooks, and wanted them mounted in wood so that you could almost swing from them...because...well, I knew they kids would swing from them!! Mounting them in the wooden trim of the stair risers meant they were mounted in something strong. We bought our hooks at the local hardware store.

This is what I do for off season storage of coats as well. I keep hats, gloves, scarves in one of those shoe organizers that you can hang on a rod in your clothes closet (they live in my closet) and I vacuum bag coats.

Jen, my dh put a 1x2 board on the wall hooked into studs.. then we painted it the same color as the wall.. and then screwed double hooks into it.. 3 levels of hooks.. with the middle level having the hooks offset from the top and bottom.
for off season storage my girls have a set of bunk beds that the top bed is attached to a built in dresser with a small closet.. that closet is my coat storage.

I bought a bunch of pink totes that I use to store all our outerwear. They stay outside in one of the sheds until I need them.
I like the vacuum pac idea, but I don't think it wouldn't be practical for us. We need to have various outerwear accessible for pretty much the whole year.
