How funny that I was coming here this morning to ask my question and saw the homemade bread thread about bread knives!
It's snowing here again and it's making me want to bake bread. Except that I haven't got enough flour nor any yeast!
So I figure the next best thing will be looking at recipes and deciding what to try (I've never baked bread before) when I do have all the ingredients.
What recipes do you like to bake? I don't have a bread machine so it'll be the "old-fashioned" way!

I simply love making bread! I've been making our own bread for a few years now, and oddly enough, I do have a breadmachine, but it sits in my pantry collecting dust year after year. I have used it, many years ago (with regularity), but there is just something so completely satisfying about making your own bread from scratch!
If you're not familiar with bread making, for me, it is a love-and-love-not relationship. I can make a loaf of bread, using the exact same recipe, and have my loaves turn out completely different each time. Bread can be tricky, so be sure to start out with a simple recipe ~ simple meaning, mix the ingredients, knead, let rise, punch down, let rise, cook, slather with butter, eat.  (no complicated steps, just the basics of dough-handling)
My personal favorite is Heidi Swanson. I've followed her for a while now and find her recipes challenge me and create, for my family, meals that enhance our taste buds and have us reaching for something different in our mouths, and not just the same-old-food, week after week. She uses ingredients that are minimally processed, and meet my approval-list.
For some easy recipes, I would simply google "simple bread", and see what pops up, then start baking and see how it goes! Have some fun! My girls love bread making day around here

Thanks for that link, Chris. We used to be vegetarians and we try to eat a lot more meatless during Lent and I'm so tired of my standby meatless meals.
My favorite bread-making book (and the book that taught me about bread) is the Tassajara Bread Book. I don't make bread as regularly as I used to but I use this book for its other recipes all the time. My copy is in shreds.
While I don't have any problem using or recommending this book I should mention that the author is a Zen priest.

Jen, I bake most of our bread. I wrote a post about breadbaking here. Maybe that will help you get started. Nothing beats homemade bread!
