Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone built/had their house built using prefabricated steel houses? Or do you have any views?

I found it funny that when I was researching this I found a company that actually sells the Duggar model.

No. But I'm all ears. We're staring down this very real possibility in our near future. We're also considering a pre-fab log cabin.

I'm sitting here with my pencil and notebook to take notes...

Well we are right in the midst of building ourselves and I can tell you we are SO pleased we bought pre-fabricated frames, although ours are timber. But dh says they were so easy for him to work with. Not really answering your question though.

Well it is just wishful thinking for us right now. When going to W'burg I saw a place with demo pre-fab log cabins - I wish I had gone to take a look

Yes Erin... you are one of the reasons I started down this road....

I don't have any experience with the prefab steel homes... but thank you for bringing it up. I did a google search and found Kodiak Homes, the one you mentioned that sells the Duggar's model. Did you see the picture of the model that made it through Hurricane Katrina? If you were building anywhere in tornado/hurricane country, I think that would be a powerful selling point. I mean, it wouldn't take an F-4 or an F-5 tornado, but -- wow! The one thing that I thought was disappointing, though, is that all their models only come standard with 3 bedrooms. So if you want more bedrooms (even just 4) you need to redesign the floor plan. My husband also wanted to know how you would go about attaching anything to the wall if you needed to drill it into a stud?

As far as log home kits go... we did spend a while looking into those when we first moved up here. But we wouldn't have been able to do any of the labor ourselves at the time, so the house would have been actually more expensive to build (at least in NY, where every kind of labor is more expensive) than a regular house. We did almost buy an already-built log home, and the one thing I noticed about it that I didn't like (there were many things *to* like about it, obviously, since we almost bought it) was that in the rooms where there were not big windows, it was quite dark. It had a great loft, though, with a little sink and a row of cabinets, all set up as a (somewhat small) art area.   The former owner did a lot of stenciling -- on the walls, window boxes, etc. It was quite nice.

Of course the real reason we didn't buy the house was the big pond in the yard... with moose tracks around it.
