What is your everyday china? I had bought a white set from JC Penney a couple of years ago that I am really disappointed with - it chips easily and worse it scratches - so there are all marks on it from knives and forks. I really need to find a good sturdy set of dishes - which is not too expensive - which can take the rigors of children loading and unloading the dishwasher. (though I don't expect them to stand up to our granite countertop  )

The graniteware/splatterware plates I got stand up very well.. the curved ones.. the cereal bowls and mugs did not, the enamel chipped away.. but the "flat bowls" are holding up well too. But they also don't shatter if dropped so.. Cox Country has lots of color of the enamelware including solid colors..

Corelle! We have "Classic Red Cafe" which I bought via Amazon for less than $25 for four place settings. If you watch for deals, you can get it for $17 a box.

I love enamelware. We have hard tile floors here and it does a number on the small set we have, chipping edges, but when we picnicked (is that spelled correctly? it looks weird) with Lindsay (CrunchyMom) she brought the most useful and pretty set of enamelware which had steel rims and I've been watching ever since for a pattern I like. She shared with me that she thought the steel rims made a big difference in durability. I hope she'll chime in here. Her enamelware came from Golden Rabbit.
Right now, I use Correlle dishes. We have had a couple of casualties on the hard tile floor, but I'd have to say that they have been pretty durable otherwise.

We have Correlle too. In the "Abundance" design. I like them a lot. So far I haven't broken one (of which I am known for). Now that I've said that I'll probably break one doing the dishes tonight!

Another Correlle user here. They get dropped on tile occasionally and usually don't break. I dropped one a couple of days ago, however, and it must have landed just right because it shattered. Other that that mishap, none of the other dishes have any chips and they have been kid-abused

We traded our Pfaltzgraf for Corelle. The newer patterns are quite pretty. They don't take up a lot of cabinet space, and are inexpensive. They are pretty durable, as mentioned. But when they do break...   A million sharp shards all over the kitchen.

We have Corelle too, and yes when it breaks it doesn't just break it shatters into a mess of powder and shards. I almost considered getting rid of our Corelle on that point. But aside from the mess after the occasional broken item, it cleans and dries beautifully in the dishwasher, it's compact and not too heavy for young helpers. And while it can break, it survives my clumsiness more often than ceramics/china etc.
It's also made in the U.S.A.

I'd love to get enamelware, but I don't think you can put it in the dishwasher can you?
I can't live without my dishwasher at the moment.

Doing a quick search it does appear that the splatterware is dishwasher safe. I dont' have a dishwasher so didn't know off the top of my head.

We have a big hodge podge of dishes for everyday - pieces from two different Corelle sets, some white melamine, and lots of Makit Plates the kids have made through the years. I really should get something new and talk about it a lot...  but can't decide.
What I would really like is a combo of Fiestaware meets Corelle . The durability and lightweight nature of Corelle combined with Fiestaware colors.

Thanks Jodie, I might email them to find out. I almost bought an enamelware set for my baby recently, but I didn't think whole dinner sets might exist.

We used to have a set of Pfaltzgraff. They eventually became so dingy and scratched although they were heavy enough that we only had a few breaks.
Last year for Christmas, I asked for one small set of white Fiestaware. (I wanted to see how they held up before investing in more.) I had heard such good things about them. Made in USA, no lead, etc...We have not had a breakage thus far, but they are getting just as scratched as the others! And they are developing what look like little rust spots on them!?!
Recently I purchased some cobalt blue glass salad plates that are made in the USA by Anchor Hocking, I think. Our floors are linoleum so breakage is not too much of a problem but I am curious to see how they stand up to scratching being glass.
For all you Corelle lovers, do they get scratched by silverware? I'm talking about those little grey lines that start showing up on the bottom of the plates and even the bowls.
Also, how does enamelware hold up to the silverware onslaught?

We *officially* have Pfaltzgraff, but I'm disappointed with it. Chips, cracks galore. I think we have 2 of our original 12 bowls. Corelle is very nice - some of our 30 year old pieces are still our stand-bys. Also, they are thin and light weight, which makes them easier for children to handle and uses up less shelf space. We haven't had problems with silverware scratching the Corelle.

I have retired all my enamelware. I used to really like the camping style mugs, but they all chipped and rusted after years of dishwasher abuse. Maybe mine was a cheaper quality than others.
I have not noticed scratches on Corelle from silverware.
I wish the mugs that came with Corelle were also the vitrelle glass as in the vintage sets. Current sets come with regular stoneware mugs, although some come with glass tumblers instead. I wonder why they discontinued the vitrelle glass mugs?

Well my answer will not help much if you use a dish washer but all our dishes are from thrift stores old dishes , asucers , soup bowls from MCC thrift etc. I love having an assortment of fine china  my fav dishes are from a set titled sunshine very country 1930'sish it has the lovliest yellow glaze with a touch of green trim with pink flowers . I lucked out and got 6 dinner plates a few sauers and dessert bowls . I do not have a dishwasher . I would one day like to perhaps have a dishset for Christmas with a nice poinsetta pattern .

We started out with heavy stoneware (wedding gift). When those broke we started using our Pfaltzgraff (also wedding gifts) --- those broke too, through the years. I started buying individual plates, just whatever caught my eye at stores/thrift shops, and then I got tired of the mixed look. I was going to get me some Corelle after liking the Arcopal Veronica we got to use abroad, but then my mom gifted me with some Italian and US-made (looks like stoneware) plates that they weren't using, so we're using those right now.
I had been saving up for Fiestaware plates, but after getting their bowls and mugs last year decided against it. They're strong and durable (no chips yet) but boy are they heavy!! And they take up so much room in the dishwasher and don't fit the spaces quite right.
Our Portmeirion salad plates and saucers have been durable (gift from SIL who lives in England) but they are way expensive IMO. The cups are not as durable, though that may be just us.
If I were to get dinnerware right now I'd consider sengWare, available at Costco. They're lead and cadmium free, and I love the colors, although I *think* they are MIC.

We have a lovely early American garage sale set.  I had a lovely set of dishes from Pier One at one point. I gradually lost most of them to breakage. The set has been discontinued, so I can't replace them. I've thought about getting another set, but I'm afraid of the same kind of thing happening...I need a set that I can get replacements for, because we seem to lose pieces a lot. So, I just have been going the direction of my linen closet, purposely picking up random pieces and hoping it looks like I planned it that way.  It doesn't...it's pretty sad looking. Too many totally different looks. I guess maybe I should stick with a theme, all off-white or something. The kids love it though, they think it's pretty.
