Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

One of my craft goals is to learn to knit socks. Does anyone have a super easy pattern? I have looked at so many free ones online, and I am overwhelmed.

I did a tutorial and the word-for-word pattern a couple of years ago ... it's in a bulky (great for cozy winter socks) but it will give you all the parts you'll need. Once you've made these, you can than go down in yarn-weight and needle size for "normal" sox!

Mary G's tutorial is awesome!

I learned on this tutorial: Come To Silver's Sock class that has instructions for different weights of yarn. The bulky weight tutorial that Mary G did would be a great start because it will come together really fast with bigger yarn and you'll feel even more successful because it's so quick. :)

I LOVE sock knitting. It's actually the reason I learned to knit in the first place and for the whole first year of knitting I almost exclusively knit socks. :)

I made a great pair (pairs actually) of slipper socks that you make by knitting a gigantic sock and felting it down. It really helped me see all the little parts that go into sock making because it was quick, with large needles, and produced a large product where all the gusset shapings etc. were easy to see.

That is what one of my goals for 2009 was...to knit socks. Once I figured it out I am in love with it! I started with a basic pattern such as this one (I can't find the one I used right now).

I like it because it's on thicker yarn and bigger needles. Good to start out that way....goes quicker!

Once I got the hang of it I started knitting on smaller needles and "real" sock yarn.

It's really fun! Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I have another question. I have some double pointed needles I bought a year or so ago. They don't say what size they are on them and I must have lost the package they came in. Other needles are labeled but these don't have a number on them anywhere. Is there a way to tell?

Lisa -- you need to get a needle-gauge ... they're usually plastic and have a ruler or other measure on them ....here are a couple you could try:
Lion Brand's gauge
here's a fancy one!
or an Inox one

Thanks Mary. I knew there had to be a way to tell.

Lisa ... a gauge is one of those tools you'll buy and have forever ... and they're not very expensive. E-holler if you have any other knitting questions ... I LOVE talking knitting!
