Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've been nursing my oven along for a few months now, but it's been getting worse and worse, so I finally called a repairman. He came and diagnosed the problem, but the part for the oven is no longer available. The oven is only 16 years old and can't be repaired.

I am very dismayed with appliances. First of all, the prices are astronomical. Then there is typically only a one-year warranty. Then, there is the fact that they just don't last like they used to.

We plan to sell our home in the spring of 2011, so I really don't care to put in a "high-end" oven, but my husband will want to put in an oven that will be a good selling point. (We just had to replace a heat pump earlier this month, and will probably need to replace the second one by summer. Also, we have two hot water heaters past their typical life spans.)

I did a cursory search for electric wall ovens and found that the Frigidaire Gallery oven is a "best buy" according to "consumersearch.com". (I don't have a subscription to consumer reports, so this was the only info I've found. It has more features than the oven I will be replacing and is about $1000 less than a newer model of my existing GE oven.

Does anyone have experience with the Frigidaire ovens? Or does anyone have any advice for my search? Do you think people really care that much about the brand or model of oven when house-hunting?

We had a Frigidaire electric double wall oven in our old house, and I loved it. I really miss my wall oven. The only complaint I ever had about the Frigidaire was we had to replace the electrical panel when the oven was about 9 or 10 years old. If I was looking at houses, a Frigidaire wall oven in a kitchen would be a bonus!

Something else to consider Diana, look for a used oven.. you could perhaps get a good name for a great deal less than buying new. And depending on the area, people who are remodeling may get rid of perfectly good appliances simply because they're getting new.

I think that this is the problem with new ovens (or maybe most appliances): when something isn't working, the whole panel has to be replaced. And, you'd better hope that the panel is still available or you have to look for a whole new appliance - which is where we are now.

As we have been searching - and no, there turns out to be no simplicity in replacing an oven - we have found that our wall space is only 23 inches deep and there are very few ovens available that will fit - and they are expensive.

Has anyone ever dealt with something like this? Are there any alternatives?

Well, we finally worked out a solution to be able to fit an oven an found a small (depth) oven that would work. We ordered it a couple of weeks ago and it came today - damaged!

We have sent it back and have called for a replacement, but first the company that we bought it from will have to sort out whose responsibility the damage is - the supplier?, the shipper?, etc. They couldn't give us an estimated date for a replacement.

My dd and I can't wait to bake again. We've been salivating over nearly every cake, cookie, and pie recipe that has come into our sights. We've decided that "one day" when we have an oven, we are going to bake, bake, bake and then invite tons of friends over to eat all of the goodies!
