Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are getting together with cousins to make non edible cookie ornaments. I've found plenty of recipes on the web for the ornaments themselves, but precious little information on how to decorate these cookies.

One brief news article suggested it could be done with acrylic paint, glitter, etc and sprayed with polyurethane spray. Is this how its normally done? I imagine that frosting piped on would fall off after awhile??? I'm not sure how to proceed.

Have you done this before? Please tell me what to do?

I use Royal Icing, glitter, beads, hard candies, whatever. Then I spray with high gloss poly when they are dry.

Could you post a recipe for the icing? And do they hold up well?

Royal icing is just a 1 lb bag of powder sugar, a tsp of cream of tartar and 3 egg whites. Dump in the mixing bowl and beat of med until fluffy. Make right before using as it hardens quickly. While we are working, I keep the bowl covered with a damp towel.

They hold up fairly well. My grandmother has a garland of cookie ornaments that my boys made almost 10 years ago. Of course she stores it super carefully when not in use. In my house they last about 3 seasons. We have a few older ones but not many. But I have a survival of the fittest type of house
