This week Im to bring some food to a new mom in my parish. She and her dh were just blessed with a second set of twins recently! 2 sets of twins in a row!
How much chicken shall I cook for 2 adults and 7 children under age ten (the smallest are 18 mos) ?
Should 8 c rice (cooked) be about right? Shall I do 10 instead?
Its easy to guage what's right for adults but kids are so impossible to figure on.

I'd do 8 cups or a little less. I'd probably bake a whole chicken and just let them divvy it up. (For my family of 4, and we are big eaters, I cook 4 frozen boneless, skinless breast pieces if I'm making something with chicken breasts, so I'd do 6-8 breasts...or 6-8 pieces...they can always cut up leftovers for sandwiches.)

I agree with Nancy and 6 - 8 breasts.
If you're doing whole chickens, depending on the size, you might make 2. I made dinner once for a family of 7 (one newborn), and they were so grateful I brought 2 chickens, as 1 chicken wasn't enough for them all!

If the chicken is in smaller pieces it goes further.
I'll take a chicken breast and cut it into oh 3 or 4 pieces before I cook it.. then everyone can have a "whole" piece of their own at the table.. but the chicken will go a lot further.. I can feed all of us here with 5-6 chicken breasts this way. Depending on how well they like something.. my 6 and up's can eat an adult portion. I guess it makes up for the times when they hardly eat 3 bites
And yes.. two chickens if you're doing whole baked chicken. If there's extra they'll love having it for chciken salad sandwiches or something for lunch.

I was planning on doing breast tenders which I get for our family often. Im going to guess 2 tenders per kid and 4 for each adult and see how that looks and works out poundage wise! Extras would never hurt.
I decided to do an asian style dish and marinate the chicken but leave the sauce separate in case the children are picky! I know people get tired of lasagna.
Thanks for the tips!

This is what I was going to say. I cooked up enough taco meat, black beans and Spanish rice to serve 8 for my friend and her husband, when she was put on bedrest. It lasted them over a week, and they were so appreciative to have these basic ingredients with which they could make tacos, burritos, tostadas, taco salad, etc. Even if there's just enough leftover for mom to have some while the kids eat pb&j and/or dad can take it for lunch, more is definitely better.
