Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

i am searching for vegetarian cookbooks....or recipes....

but i have a few criteria.

i can't have much soy - so i am not looking for the kind of cookbooks that just use TVP in place of meat and try to recreate a meat dish.

i am allergic to dairy.

DH is deathly allergic to mushrooms.

i would like it to be strong in the grain area (and would love some more idea for what to do with quinoa!)

i don't mind complicated or time intensive recipes.

however, simple and easy are not bad things, either.

can anyone help me?

I would go with Moosewood cookbooks. There are a lot and they are all vegetarian. Some recipes include tofu but not most (I can't have soy either). There are a few mushrooms recipes as well but, again, not most. I own the original and Moosewood Resturant Cooks at Home. One caveat is that all the Moosewoods except the original send part of their proceeds to a charity--most of which I find objectionable. Check it out before buying.

I agree with Susan. My Moosewood cookbooks are my most used ones. Check out Mollie Katzen's books, too. I know that the Moosewood dessert cookbook gives a percentage of proceeds to a Planned Parenthood that is local to the restaurant. To avoid any issues, you could look for used ones on Amazon.

The two I have are Laurel's Kitchen and Diet for a Small Planet. I'm dating myself w/these titles...haven't done vegetarian for years. I don't remember if the latter title is a cookbook, per se, but I do remember learning a lot about food combining to get complete proteins.

I second Mollie Katzen cookbooks. You can most likely find them in your public library system.

i *love* Deborah Madison. her Greens Cookbook has the yummiest recipe for "Legumbres en Pipian" (a vegetable stew perfect for fall). she also wrote Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone.

I like VegWeb and CheapHealthyGood websites.

I also have a few links to "Meatless Meals we Love" on the sidebar of my blog.

Tonight we had Indonesian stew (basically, chickpeas, curry powder, onion, and whatever veggies are around) over rice. (Tonight's veggies: summer squash, celery, carrot)

I thought that The Vegan Lunchbox was a terrible cookbook, though.

I used to get Vegetarian Times magazine and we still have some favorites in my personal cookbook from those days. I don't know if the magazine still exists but it was great.
