Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Related to this request for help to pack 3 meals a day for my dh when he is home, I'm wondering if and of you super wives have figured out how to send food with your dh when he travels...up to a week at a time? I dare to dream .

Love,

what options does he have for reheating? and for keeping cold? can he replenish ice often? I can give you an idea of what we're taking this weekend (3 days) that doesn't require any heating

bagels with cream cheese
muffins
oatmeal bars
yogurts
string cheese
fruit
raw veggies
layer dip and chips
cold fried chicken and rolls
sandwich fixings

Options vary...that's the hard part. Sometimes he drives, sometimes he flies. Sometimes he stays at a nice hotel in a major city. Sometimes he's very rural remote and the accomodations are slim. Sometimes the hotel has a refrigerator/microwave and sometimes not. Next week he flies out of state for a week. I'm not sure how much luggage he can bring. Hmmm...I wonder if we can mail some food?

Thanks for brainstorming with me, Jodie!

Love,

Well if he heads to the store instead of the resturant.. the fruit and raw veggies is easy.. deli fried chicken can be hot the first night and eaten cold leftover.   One of the soft sided coolers could solve the problem of no refrigerator and could pack right into his luggage for the flight and then be pulled out to use once there.

My dh packs food in his checked bags...boxed items work well (he likes Pop Tarts, Cheez Whiz spray and the Quaker Oats oatmeal bars ) Soup cans (and can opener), PB and crackers, stuff like that, all travel well. For a short or nonstop flight you could stuff all kinds of food in there...bread, pretzels, boxed cereal...but it depends on who has to pay the checked bag fees. (Check on this, because some of the airlines that didn't have fees before have them now, and others are adding $5 per bag if you don't prepay online.)

I often fly with a cutting board, knife and corkscrew in my checked baggage. We buy bread, cheese, fruit, etc. locally and picnic.

If he will be driving a lot, invest in one of those ice chests that plug into your cigarette lighter. (We have a big one.) Some have AC converters, too, so you can plug them in when you get to your hotel. If he is driving with this, he can take all kinds of stuff...lunch meat, salad, milk in small containers...Your investment will pay for itself very quickly.

Hotel rooms without fridges are a big challenge (if flying) because all you have for cold storage is the ice bucket. It isn't cold enough overnight, usually, to work well.

Maybe he can find hotels with breakfasts?

Things to pack every trip: can opener, spoon, small cutting board, knife, bowl, spoon, PB&J.

DH suggests cans of Vienna sausages, beef jerky, rolls (to make PB&J) as well as hitting local grocery stores for fresh items. He likes canned sardines, too...

What you don't want to do is fall into the pre-packaged trap (Little Debbie stuff tastes good, but...). That is the Super-Size Me path!

Could you make granola and have him take it along? (I use the recipe from the book Miserly Moms. Can't keep it around for more than 24 hours!)

Oh, trail mix! Almonds are probably the healthiest nuts to take for snacks.

If PB&J isn't an option (or gets boring), herbed cream cheese is a wonderful spread on baguettes. Yum. Or, what about those tuna packets (not cans, foiled pouches)? DH says some are dry, but he does like the lemon pepper tuna.

For granola/cereal bars, South Beach Diet is one of the healthier brands. Even people in kidney failure can eat them. Clif bars are expensive but pretty healthy in a pinch.

For sweets, could you pre-make Rice Krispies treats and pack them for him?

Any liquids in checked baggage should be in two ziplock bags. Items in glass bottles should be wrapped in a bath towel and placed inside a plastic bag. (Just in case he hits a winery...)

On a long nonstop flight cheese will stay cold in checked bags.

ETA: Wow, this is long! Sorry...

Up to a week is hard, if flying. When it's that long, my dh refuses to bring food with him (he has to bring that AND luggage)... so I just give him guidelines on what not to eat (allergies, etc.) When driving he does take food.

For the daily stuff, I'd pack

Breakfast:

granola bars or granola
v8
yogurt if he has a cooler he can use
green tea if he has access to hot water
instant oatmeal in different flavors
fresh fruit for the first couple of days, dried fruit other days

Lunch:
kimbap if he likes that
pasta or rice salad
with protein like chopped up chicken, tuna, or grilled salmon
plus lots of chopped up veggies
yesterday, i gave dh rice pasta+vegenaise+capers+green onions+kalamata olives+grilled red peppers
last week it was brown rice topped with corn salsa and avocado
with refrigeration those would be fine for the first couple of days
then i'd pack frozen meals like here ==> if i remember correctly, some of these containers held stews/soups and the rest were rice and veggies. dh would heat them up in the hotel microwave (he brought real plates/bowls to heat them up in) then transfer to his bento box

hth

trail mix = i go to whole foods and get a bunch of bulk nuts and dried fruits that he likes/is not allergic to -- mix it up and add dark chocolate chunks and that's it

We've found that packing a little George Foreman grill (the countertop version) and a can opener, plus a set of dishes, helps with the traveling/eating. If you have an AC adapter thing for your car, you can plug the Foreman grill in and cook right there!

He'll have to hit a grocery store, though, to pick up a chicken breast or meat. My husband has lived in dumpy motels for weeks at a time with these two things.

I usually send sturdy fruit and veg with him - carrot sticks, apples, nectarines (not cucumbers and peaches, for example).
