Hi Ladies!
Elizabeth said it'd be ok to ask this question of you all.
In one of my many careers, I design hand-knits for some of the knitting publications. I've also done a book for Joan Stromberg at Ecce Homo Press.
But, I'd like to do a book about implementing knitting into the CM homeschool. My idea is either a general "how to" knitting book with fun projects for girls AND boys to do -- with history of knitting and fun facts (similar to CHC's Sewing with St. Anne). The other option would be less a "how to knit" and more a resource book for projects tied to living books -- patterns based on great family read-alouds or history unit studies (ever knitted a helmet for the knight in your family ) that would be suitable for the student to make (or even the parent to make with the younger student).
What do y'all think? Would you be interested in such a book. What would you like to see included. I'm thinking an age range from 7-11 or so? Projects for both boys and girls? Tied to literature or history? A unit study approach or a mix of just great read-alouds?
I'd like to do a proposal for Therese at CHC who has shown some interest in such a project. If I had some feedback from you ladies that would help immensely.
Blessings and thanks!

Mary,
I think the literature based pattern book with fun facts and history would be a good idea. Unique.
There are plenty of How to's and there are local places for help free .Linking to a favorite read aloud, story or history unit might pull in new knitters.

Hi Mary,
I LOVE the sound of your knitting book! I have three boys (10, 6 and 4) who are completely fascinated when I knit. One of my New Year goals is to MAKE time for handcrafts in our family life.
I am still a newbie knitter (despite years of reading about it and buying supplies!), but I love your idea of tying in knitting projects with a CM-living books education. It's a unique concept and sounds fantastic!
I'll be eager to hear more!

Mary, I really like the idea of your knitting book that could have projects for boys. I have a knight in my house who would LOVE a knight's helmet.

Madame Defarges? Little Women? Little House. They all knit right? It would be fun to incoporate handcrafts with Living Books. Good luck.

Here's another interested person! I love to knit and crochet and would love to have some "boy" projects as that's all we've got here!

I love all the ideas, I can't seem to choose. Even if you just had a book of projects for boys, including practical ones, that would be wonderful for my wants! I haven't seen much out there like that.
I'd love to see a little of the history of knitting and the impact on history, but a living history and literature book would be superlative!
What keeps coming to my mind is all the knitted socks women made for their men in wartime...and gloves and scarves.

I love the idea too. And I know my dd would love to knit--I could see period things that fit her American Girl dolls; they'd be small and easily finished and would encourage to try larger things. Right? I don't knit--so you'd have to educate me too!

Mary, I just took up knitting again but am such a beginner. I'd be a buyer, for sure. And the literature/unit ideas are a bonus, for me.

This sounds like a great idea! I'd love the literature/unit study idea!
I'm a wannabe knitter. I do know how to crochet and I am branching out trying to make a sweater that Lissa posted on her blog awhile back but still an amateur here...
Sorry to digress...sounds great!

Sweater?!
Finally knitting sweater after scads of small projects, it is a simple sweater , knit in one piece from the neck down. How could I mess up the sleeve? It is so simple.
rip
rip
rip
And start again and chart out those decreases!
I should really stick to mittens and hats and even tea cozies.
BTW, is there a link to the sweater on Lissa's blog ?

This sounds great! I have my girls all knitting basics,
scarfs, pot holders, and wash-cloths. Tube socks would be great with all the self-striping yarns out there now!
Go for it!!! Happy knitting...busy fingers for both
boys and girls!
Blessings for the New Year!

MAry, this sounds great! My daughter an I have knit the gnomes from Natural Earth Family Farm and they were so fun and easy! I'm going to try and upload them to my blog sometime this week. I think Lissa did these too
The project book sounds wonderful as I am a novice. Go for it, it'll be super!!

Oh, I don't think I can wait that long, Mary! I was hoping to have a few knitting/crochet sessions with my nephews and nieces in the next month. Can you point me to a practical, easy, beginner project, that a boy would enjoy? I know your book will be better, but is there such a thing now that I can use? Oldest age is 8, youngest about 4. I'm ambitious!
Actually, the one niece who knows the basic steps is the one that received your other knitting book for Christmas. I'll tell her to bring it. Is there a project you would recommend?

Mary, I would also LOVE to have such a resource! I have Sewing With St. Anne. I plan on using it this spring with our two eldest children. Having a Literature/History based pattern book would IMHO be something that has not been available before. You could count me down for several...for dd's hope chests, gifts, myself .
I've taught myself to knit this winter so that I could teach my dd. She's working on the Knitting badge for Keepers at Home.
I am using the video clips on www.knittinghelp.com & the Vogue Knitting Book to learn.
My dd is using Kids Knitting by Melanie Falick which has lots of projects. However, I don't think there are any projects for doll clothing which I noted are in your book at Ecce Homo Press!
Anyway, I think there are alot of "How To" type knitting books out there and something CMish is bound to have an appeal!
Blessings,
Angela

I don't want you to think I'm ignoring you -- I'm compiling some stuff and will probably PM it to (if that's ok)?
Thanks ladies for all your positive feedback on this. I'm also trying to get on the "dance card" of a few homeschooling conferences to talk about just this subject.
You've all given me some fuel for the fire!
Thanks!

Mary,
Some extra hints for struggling young knitters would be handy...dd (just 8) still needs me to hold the needles with her. Maybe we are using the wrong kind of needles?
Scottish boys all learned to knit, long ago and way back when.
When I was an exchange student in Ireland, girls in grades 3 & 4 learned to knit in school. I was amazed.
I love this idea. I hope it's a 110% success for you!
