hi, i am wondering how you all file bills, receipts, etc. do you have a file for each month or a file for each kind of bill (like water, electric, credit card, etc)? i was thinking some super organized woman like dawn could help me out. thanks

I do each kind.. that way I also have somewhere to file any extra papers without having to remember what month they came in later. If you keep them in date order within the file then it's easy to keep only a certain number of them.

Then at the end of the year (I only keep bills and things for the one year) I'll go through and the stuff that I need to keep for longer all goes in one folder for the year.. mostly that's my dh's work stuff.

I'm not sure if this is the answer you are looking for, but I'll tell you what I do.

I use a crate file system similar to Dawn's. When a bill arrives in the mail, I place it in the weekly folder according to the due date. When I get to that week, I pay the bills in that folder. ***side note -- all our bills are paid with a Visa that earns cash for every purchase***. Once the bill is paid, it goes into the Visa folder. When I get the monthly Visa bill, I match up all the receipts and make copies of any for tax purposes. The tax ones go in the yearly tax folder and the Visa bill gets paid and put in the Visa folder.

We only have a few bills -- electric, lp gas, phone, so this may be too simplified for you. It works for us!
