Please would you give me some ideas of good snacks for postpartum nursing mamas. After 9 months of not being able to eat much or really enjoy food, I am constantly hungry. Nursing also makes me really hungry. Soon I am going to have to stop indulging in the cookie and dessert jars - and start having some healthy snacks. I just cannot think of what to have. I cannot do any peanuts or tree nuts.

I think a dd who made her mother smoothies would have a great reward waiting in heaven.    I have the same problem immediately postpartum; I'm always starving, and the only thing anybody leaves out that I can grab in the 2 minutes before I sit down to nurse again is cookies.
 
 Mini muffins of some healthy variety are great, too, but somebody has to make them.

In my nursing stage I feast on granola.  I also eat a ton of dried fruits, especially raisins.
 
 Hope that helps, oh and I do the smoothie thing with yogurt and lots of fresh fruits.

I ate a lot of the individual sized applesauces (no sugar added), whole milk yogurt, cheese and crackers, hard-boiled eggs, milk and buttered toast, cream cheese on bagels, granola (if you can find some with no nuts), dried and fresh fruit. Pretzel sticks/veggies dipped in a soft cheese would be good too. If you have a child who likes to bake, perhaps an oatmeal raisin cookie with less sugar would also work for you.

I second keeping hard boiled eggs on hand. If you're really hungry, they're easy to slice and make into a sandwich.
 
 How about string cheese, or tuna (already made up) - that goes well (and quickly!) with crackers.

Two eggs scrambled with grated cheese.  I make a quick fruit smoothie with a banana, apple, some yogurt and a handful of blueberries and a bit of water thrown in the vita-mix.  Those are 2 quick snacks for me.

I got a few recipes in a reply to this post  The "Lara bars" are great, but have nuts.  There is a yummy smoothie recipe from Betsie if you're not afraid of raw eggs (we have our own laying hens, so I know ours are fresh)  and a couple of healthful oatmeal bar recipes from Jodie if you're up to making up a batch of something to snack on.  
 
 I like granola (you could make your own with oats toasted with honey + dried fruit - no nuts) to top some yogurt.
 
 cream cheese and raisins on celery sticks; and carrot and raisin salad are standard "veggie" snacks in our house.
 
 I have to eat a lot of bread to keep up my energy and weight - bagels are good.  Sugar has been bothering me this pregnancy and so I've been eating onion bagels w/ veggie cream cheese or buttering some bread and sprinkling with garlic and Parmesan to toast quickly in the oven.  I make up extra ww pancakes or waffles and keep them in the fridge for snacks, though the kids usually get those.  If you have a favorite dinner roll or herb bun recipe, you can make and freeze a bunch of that - keep a few in the fridge, ready to eat.
 
 I like the hard boiled egg idea for an occasional option and I've also been known to open a can of tuna and mix in a bit of mayo and mustard to eat with saltines - or a full-blown sandwich if I'm really hungry.

I like apples when I'm nursing.
 I make our granola with
 
 2c rolled oats
 1/2c sunflower seeds
 1/4c sesame or flax seeds
 plus anything else that you might like
 1/3c oil
 1/2c honey
 
 1.mix dry ingredients
 2.mix the oil and honey well and add to the oat mix
 3.spread out on buttered baking sheet
 4.bake at 300* for 20min stirring half way through
 5.cool and keep in airtight containers
 
 I always make a double batch and it's gone within the week. Of course I have lots of boys to help it disappear  .It tasts great on plain yogurt too.

Thank you all for the great suggestions. I do have problems keeping weight on when nursing - and I feel so tired and hungry - I have to eat something each time I nurse! My lovely dh has been shopping and we have tons of good snacks now. I do make my own granola - problem is it goes as quickly as I make it as all my kids love it. I plan on making a triple batch tomorrow and also some granola bars. My snacks are:
 
 - TJ's mini cinnamon raisin bagels with cream cheese
 - frozen/fresh blueberries with creamline yogurt and maple syrup
 - toast and my favorite Kerrygold butter
 - granola with yogurt
 - applesauce
 - banana and yogurt
 - Vimta crackers and cheese
 - cheese stick
 - apple and cheese
 - grapes and cheese
 - Weetabix and whole milk
 
 Funny thing - my stomach seems very sensitive right now - I am not tolerating raw vegetables at all or anything high fiber like flax. Even cooked veg can give me cramps. Odd as I am a big veggie/salad person.
 
 I am craving all the stodgy warm comfort food - and the cold rainy weather is contributing to this.

Marilyn, are you having a snack during one of those night feeds, along with some water? I found that helped me a lot when nursing.
 
 And it must be granola week! I'm working on a batch, too!
