Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am trying so hard to get fish back into our meals once a week. Can anyone tell me if they have found an econmical way to buy good, clean, fish? I don't have a great fresh seafood store nearby. I've been purchasing salmon, haddock, and tilapia from Whole Foods, but I don't get out there enough and it can be pricey. I've never tried frozen or fish sticks, but willing to try.

Any suggestions?

I buy yellowfin tuna (canned). Yellowfin has lower mercury levels than albacore. We do tuna melts and recently started doing smoe "corny tuna cakes" (sometimes with peas instead of corn) from a recipe posted in a canned salmon thread here.

You can also buy canned wild Alaskan salmon. Wild Alaskan is better than farm raised.

I have also bought wild Alaskan salmon whole and frozen from Trader Joes for a good price. It can be pricey, but Trader Joes has the best price around our area. I think you can also get it in patties there, but I'm not sure.

Trader Joes also has my favorite fish sticks with no additives that I don't like. They are cod, I believe, but I couldn't tell you anything about the fish itself (how "clean" it is).

I need to get out to Trader Joe's! I will check out the fish sticks. Thank you!

I'm pregnant, so I also need to watch my fish intake. I looked up yellowfin and learned that it's the "safe" tuna while pregnant. It's canned light tuna. Cod is safe, too.

The only fish I buy is frozen, from Trader Joe's. Sorry, but the fish counter at our Whole Foods really stinks. I just can't buy fish when the store smells fishy. I buy tilapia, salmon, tuna steaks, etc. frozen from TJ's. I haven't ever had fillets that are mushy after thawing. I have also bought frozen panko breaded tilapia fillets from TJ's that were very, very good, but I haven't seen them at our store in a while.
