Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm ashamed to admit that I left my pizza stone in the oven and turned on the self-cleaning cycle.    It started to smoke really badly which made me wonder if there was a huge chunk of dropped food in there, so I turned it off. When I could open the oven I was dismayed to see my poor pizza stone. My once well seasoned 'grease-residue-brown' stone is now a nice ash-black. My guess is that the oil in the stone was burning and smoking. I'm glad I stopped the cycle but it was either that or set off the smoke alarms!

I looked on the internet and apparently I'm not the only one to do this, but one person said they purposely put the stone in the oven during self-clean and it comes out like new. Not so mine. Question is should I trash the stone because the black finish will make what I cook taste like smokin' oil?

I don't use a stone.. my guess is that it blackened but didn't burn off.. so.. if you're going to trash it anyway maybe put it back in and run the clean cycle and see if the ick wouldn't burn away.. maybe on a day you can have windows open?

I've used spray oven cleaner on cast iron to get off a cruddy finish.. scrubbed it really well and reseasoned it.. I wonder if you could use that to get the burnt oils out and start over? My FIL has used it to get oil out of concrete so maybe..

Well, maybe you could try to cook on it first, and see how it goes? My MIL has a black stone, and it's just from use. If you cook on it and it's not too bad, I wouldn't throw it out yet.

I agree about trying the cycle again, with the windows open.

Thanks for the responses. The whole house smelled pretty bad yesterday but today it was warm and I was able to open the windows for a while.

And I smelled the pizza stone (nose to stone) and could not make out a hint of burnt oil smell; that surprised me! So I think I'll try cooking some chicken nuggets on it next week and see how it goes.
