I don't have a pantry closet, so my potatoes end up on my counter and they take up a lot of room! My dilemma is that we have upper cabinets for our canned goods.
So I'm wondering where you keep your potatoes to spark ideas for where to keep my big spuds.

I have a very crowded pantry closet, so that's where they go, but it's not ideal. Seems a little too perfect to get those buds growing again.
How about your basement Maryan? Put them in a container like your trash can to hold onions and potatoes?
I dislike things on my counters, and anything that can find a home elsewhere, I try. But trust me, even though I don't like it, doesn't mean they are clean.

Basement. I have a open top box that I throw the potatoes and onions in. Nice and cool, so I can buy them in larger quantities and they last longer.

In the fridge. I remember hearing that it kept them from sprouting and scaring me every time I opened the cabinet.  It does work but takes up room in the fridge.

I store mine in my pantry, so that's no help. I used to put my onions and potatoes in the same place until I read that it's best not to. I tried to find some scientific explanation as to why, but didn't have any luck:

We have a room we use for food storage (300sq ft of potential food storage fun). So we have the potatoes in the big box we get them from from Sams, under a big blanket, to keep them in a good dark place...

I bought a 55-pound sack from a local farmer. He delivered it in a brown sack. We keep it in the garage with the paper rolled down. It works pretty well.

I have them in a "cutsie" wicker basket on the counter so they can breathe and I remember that I have them (lots of rooted potatoes in my past  ).
Remember to keep them so air can circulate and never keep them in plastic bags or containers that will let air in .... rotten potatoes have a rather noxious smell (don't ask ...)

Cool, dark place is best for storage and preventing sprouting (think root cellar  ). Well since most of us don't have that, the basement does seem to be a reasonable alternate option. We can keep ours in the garage in the winter (but not in summer). You can keep them in the dark by keeping them in a closed box (shouldn't be airtight though) or a brown paper bag with the sides rolled down. And as Mary mentioned the should be removed from the plastic bag first.

big cardboard box in the garage lids closed for the 10 lb bags of potatoes that I haven't opened and the bottom drawer in the kitchen for the one or two in use.
And onions go in a seperate place.. having potatoes and onions together makes one of them sprout more than otherwise.

I have potatoes,onions and garlic in a tri-level hanging basket in the kitchen. Easy access. You definitely want them out of that bag!

Hmm... lots of ideas!! I'm a little afraid of the basement in that... if I don't see something, it just doesn't exist.  And we don't have a garage otherwise that would work.
And I absolutely did not know about the get-the-potatoes-out-of-the-plastic-bag rule!!! And have suffered those consequences as well.
See the out of sight out of mind and awful noxious smell are both my problems in figuring a solution to one of my favorite foods (which you would think I wouldn't leave to rot somewhere!)
I don't have space in my fridge, but I am thinking about the wicker basket or hanging basket ideas. I can probably stack more in basket and take up less counter room!

In the fridge ... the fridge is small and they take up too much space  . I used to keep them in the garage, until they started getting eaten by mice

We buy them in 50# bushels, so I have a large copper wash bin, that I use to hold them. We keep them in the kitchen, we go through them fast, I bushel a month, so we never have the rotting issue. Though I do know to get them out of the bags ASAP!

So I have to keep mine completely hidden away, I have to do the plastic bag and we eat them right away. It's because I'm allergic...but not to eating them. I have to literally wear this gas mask painting mask thing to peel them and if I don't have gloves on when I do it, my hands turn bright red and itch ferociously for an hour! Oh and if I don't wear the mask, I have to use my rescue asthma inhaler within about 10 minutes of being exposed. My dh finds it amusing to some point...want to see mommy instantly not breathe!!! LOL My dc think I'm an alien when I wear the mask!
But I can eat them...I can even eat the skins that are scrubbed clean...I can't breathe them!!!!
So needless to say, we don't have them much!

I don't think potatoes are supposed to be stored in the fridge. Something about the starches turning to sugar faster, I think. Also, they should be kept out of the light and not stored with onions. Such a troublesome vegetable!
I know there are some folks that avoid all peppers, tomatoes and potatoes...I think because they are all part of the nightshade family? It seems to me I was just reading about a friend with ms that avoided them for health reasons. Who knew?

We grow our own. I store them in huge plastic mesh laundry hampers in the basement. We layer the potatoes with straw.
We used to keep them in the garage, but the last 3 winters have seen sustained temps well below zero, and they froze disite being well wrapped.

Exactly what I was asking myself just yesterday, "WHERE are my POTATOES!?" as I rummaged around the floor of the pantry. Clearly, this thread calls me to a higher sense of order !
