Hey there,

Everywhere I have read that Bosch is the best. Is the universal the best one?

I have read some reviews that give negatives: too hard to clean, aren't good for "small" batches.

What do you think? We probably would make smaller batches than some of your families, as we only have 3 children. But does that mean I have to make several loaves of bread everytime? How much of an inconvenience is that?

I read one review that said she couldn't mix up a batch of cookies, too small...so I'm thinking, make the extra and freeze it. But am I missing out on a vital point here?

So, is bosch what you would go with? I hate to even think about spending $300-400, but that is what it looks like these run...

I'm open to other suggestions too! THANKS!!

Ok, so I did a quick search from these boards and it looks like most love the Bosch or Electrolux.

It appears that the Bosch is the cheaper of the 2, which will probably help make that choice for me.

I also noticed that in Oct. 2007 I asked a similar question...I had just gotten the Nutrimill (from Carole N on the boards!) and was *thinking* of getting a mixer. HA! So, here I am in 2009 still needing the info.

Well, actually, I used breadmakers for years and they have all died (3 so far) so I'm thinking a mixer is the better option instead of investing in another bread machine.

Anyway, so if any of you have any tips other than that...feel free to share!

If you're not looking to make several whole-grain loaves at the same time, the KitchenAid may be a better choice for you. It's less expensive than either the Bosch and Electrolux. I have the Electrolux -- got it when I was still making 4 loaves or so of bread at a time; I don't anymore (wheat allergies). These days I use it mostly for brioche-dough-making -- for gifts. I would totally go back to the KA if all I wanted to make was 1 loaf at a time or cakes and cookies.

Stef, thanks! I am grinding my own wheat...and someone told me the Kitchen Aid doesn't hold up with fresh hard white wheat?

Hi Candace,
I may be in the minority here but I use my Kitchen Aid Professional model to make 5-6 loaves at a time and I LOVE it. I didn't start out with this mixer. I actually, after MUCH research, bought the K-Tec Kitchenetics Kitchen Machine. It's works in a similar fashion to the Bosch yet wasn't as expensive at the time. It also has the most powerful blender I've ever seen! Yet, it just wasn't a good fit for me.

With the K-Tec, the bowl moves around the paddles which are positioned in the middle column of the bowl. Conversely, with the Kitchen Aid, the bowl remains still and the paddle does the moving. I find that mechanism easier for bread making but I think that's just a matter of personal preference. If you're at all interested in my K-Tec, it has been sitting in a box for a year and a half. I'd love to sell it. You can pm me if that interests you.

I also have a friend who has a DLX and she loves it although I, personally, have never seen it in operation.

Hope this rambling helps!

Martha

Martha, thanks for the offer! I will read up on it and see if it looks like something I would like.

I used my first Bosch so hard that it died after 13 years, then turned around and bought another. I have no trouble keeping it clean, and it's great for other baked goods too. They have recently changed the style but I think it still works the same.

I asked about this several months ago and with Stefoodie's help with links and things, I did a ton of reading. I am going with the Bosch when I change up (my older Magic Mill style machine is dying a slow painful death after 10 yrs...). If whole grain bread is your focus, I would be hesitant with the KA. I read tons of reviews from serious home bakers who had nothing good to say about it when used primarily for bread doughs.

I would imagine that if you make at least a 2 loaf batch, you wouldn't have a problem? I also like that the Bosch has cookie paddles!

The Electrolux looks awesome to me, but its very expensive and well...the Bosch is already very similar to what I am using, whereas the Electrolux is very different. I imagine there is a learning curve with it, and I decided I'd rather just use something that I already know how to use.

Have you spent any time at the Urban Homemaker's site? I like reading her once a year catalogue as she combines her passion for healthful eating/living with her devout protestant faith.

Hi Candace, what they said about the whole grain bread. I thought maybe you only meant regular ap flour. My 2 KAs (Ultra Power, not Professional) died on whole grain recipes.
