Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Just curious as I know many of you have a lot of dc that get things handed down and down and so forth.

I have made it a real effort to declutter completely all the rooms BUT sometimes I run across a few things that I don't want to sell I would rather give them away * myself *to some one in need. Does this make sense?
I just like to see good things go to those that need that particular thing/s. Instead of shipping it off to who knows where.
Is that just weird?

I used to try to do that, pack things up for a specific person that could use what I had. boy clothes for one pregnant friend, girl clothes for another, etc. But I realized that because of my personality, it was better just to get it out of the house right away. I had bags all over the place waiting for when I would see someone. Now, unless I have a specific time to pass something on, it all goes right out the door to Goodwill.

Anything larger I try to Freecycle.

Ditto for me....the thought of driving the things all over (because I always forget to bring it at the right time) was stressful- so I always thrift it right away...

I do the same, and usually (when I remember!) pray over the stuff that the people who get it are the ones can use it the most. I figure God can do better at finding them than I can anyway.

ETA: Whoops, trigger finger too quick! I wasn't quite done. I just wanted to add that this allows me to give away much more, because it's easier.

Yes you all right, but I do give stuff away to charities. I guess it is just really good things that I hang on to.

A parish in a neighboring town where many of my husband's coworkers live has a day room where they will take clothing for women and children and coats. If I have something seasonal I know they always need, I will send it there via my husband so that I know this item is going straight to someone in need. This is only good for clothing and baby items, really, so we thrift everything else. We haven't had good luck with freecycle pick ups.

I really do understand this. I also came back to say I don't think your thoughts on it are weird (I was afraid I came across that way on my post!)

I've really had to convince myself that "good" or "bad" it's all just STUFF and it really *isn't* good or bad... it's just something I'm not using, so GOODBYE.

I often feel the same way about giving away the "good" things or the things I have sentimental attachment to. However, multiple times I have been on the receiving end of these unsolicited hand-me-downs.

And while I appreciate the sentiment, I am often put in a difficult situation because I have RARELY been given something I liked or would use. How can you reject hte thing without feeling like you are rejecting the person who gives it to you? So then it clutters up some corner of my house until I can sneak it into the giveaway in the next state by our dentist's office or until I move again.    This is completely out of a desire to respect the feelings of the giver whom I love.

So for my part, I choose to give away everything to a good charity or ASK people if they would like the "good" stuff before giving it because I don't want it to be a burden for the receiver.

Just a perspective.... (BTW, my FIL is currently decluttering his house by taking all of this sort of thing and bringing it to MY house. It's Very Frustrating....)

I love to give stuff away to the "right" people, charity, school whatever. ("Right" can mean that they will use it, appreciate it, or use the money they get from it responsibly.)

But...like Molly, this often ends up in piles and bags of stuff that aren't anywhere.

Now I try to remember to pray over whatever I'm giving and just bring it to Salvation Army or another local place. For me, letting this control go is a definite process!

(I choose Salvation Army because they have a higher ratio of giving versus administration costs than most.)

Claudia

I give to specific friends, I know how much I appreciate when they give to me. The deal is they go through, keep what they want and then pass on to the op-shop. In fact I have a couple of friends whose boys are just a bit older than mine so I get the boys clothes, their girls are just a bit younger than mine so they get the girls. The bags are put straight into my car when I go through cupboards so I can't forget, it is just then a matter of handing over bags when I see them next.
