Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hey there all you imaginative and crafty women!

My girl scout troop is performing a Maori stick dance (we are New Zealand) for Thinking Day at the end of February. We are trying to put together a costume something like this:

We don't have much money to spend on this. We are going to try to make the piupiu skirt (that is the stiff exterior skirt) using drinking straws, yarn and some pony beads.

Any ideas on pulling off the top, the headband and under skirt from the picture? I thought at first of buying dresses from dharma trading to dye, but with all the layoffs in our troop even that is out of our reach. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Michelle

Could you get handkerchiefs and sew them together for the tops? Handkerchiefs are a Girl Scouts duct tape - use them for everything.

I would have the girls just wear leggings under the overskirt.

I was going to say bandanas.. have the girls wear something under (that they already own like a tank top with straps in one of the colors on the bandana) and you could put together bandanas to give them the patterned top and edging of the skirt.. if you wanted to make actual skirts.. a simple rectangle sewn into a cylinder and then the top turned under for a casing for elastic and sew bandanas around the bottom edge.

Handkerchiefs and bandanas! What a great idea. I'll see if Oriental Trading has some.
