I have to know how you ladies (especially those with bigger families than mine) organize your everyday flatware. Ours is already spilling over the skinny little compartments that were designed into the expandable thing I have in there right now. The expandable part is only in the sides and doesn't do much good. I know this seems silly, but it drives me crazy to see it all jumbled up in there. Any ideas?

my flatware is rather flat so that it does fit in the all in one tray with the little compartment.. except the butter knives.. and I just flip flop those end to end so that they won't spill over.
They do make individual compartements that will attach together that are much bigger.. if you have the space for them.

We have tiny kitchen drawers that never fit a silverware organizer very well, so when my mom bought us a new set of everyday flatware, I took the opportunity to look for something "different". We now store it all out, in a desk organizer that I bought half price at Michaels. I can't seem to find a similar one online, but imagine an oval with six compartments, three on each side, with a handle running through the middle. That give us room for salt/pepper too. It's really worked well for us.

We don't personally have this issue, but I've seen a few families who have cutlery holders that just sit on the counter. I've seen two kinds: one I know is from IKEA and are made from wood; the other is metal and can actually have the wet silverware placed in - with a tray underneath, it sure saves time sorting it all!

So Amy, where do you keep the caddy? On the table or the counter? I am not sure I could get use to reaching someplace other than a drawer to grab a spoon but I might consider trying if it allows us to free up a drawer.

We use a Longaberger basket with dividers. The basket gets moved around on the counter tops or the buffet depending on where I need to serve food. I think we have service for 20 in it and they are pretty hefty. We unload right from the dishwasher into the basket.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a Longaberger basket?

I did not pay these prices for mine, my SIL was a consultant. I use them for many things. The one i use for flatware seems to have been discontinued.

I got a drink caddy a few years ago at Target. A metal one. Six compartments, so I've got all of the knives in two compartments, the small forks in one, the tall ones in another, big spoons in another, and small spoons in the last one. I keep my extra pieces (serving pieces, etc) in a drawer, just cause I don't use them as often as I do the rest.
It works really really well for us. Before we moved here, I had them in a drawer, and it was AWFUL...silverware EVERYWHERE. Nothing ever stayed put, it was a wreck...

It's definitely a hard habit to break! Although I do keep some odd pieces in the same drawer where the silverware used to go, so I can pull out a "spork" or a big serving spoon and pretend I don't feel like a total doofus that I reached into the drawer YET AGAIN even though the silverware has been on the counter for SIX MONTHS.
I had it on the diningroom table for awhile (where we eat - we outgrew our kitchen) but it's found a more permanent home on the counter in the kitchen because it didn't fit well with all the serving bowls we usually put out for dinner.

This is such a great idea. We are always serving up the food and then having to come back into the kitchen for utensils. I even think I have a basket I could use right now. If we have the flatware in a basket we could just get the basket and we wouldn't have to ask who needed forks or spoons. It could sit in the kitchen and we could move it to the dining room for meals. You guys are so smart!
