Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've got several knitting projects on my plate for Christmas. I'm a frustratingly slow knitter. No solution for that. But the time I have to do it in private without ds peeking is even slimmer amount of time, making it harder.

But another time waster is winding up that ball of yarn. I was thinking of asking for a yarn winder for Christmas. I remember reading on someone's blog about a year ago (?) that they got a nice one. My local knitting shop has one...but I would like some feedback.

Worth it? Does it save time and frustration? Recommendations?

Yes to all of your questions ... KnitPicks ball-winder is the one I've got (I think they're all the same one!).

I like that the ball is a center-pull donut that sits flat on the table or floor and doesn't roll around picking up dust, hair, lego pieces etc. The benefit to the center-pull is the yarn is not under undo stress while knitting.

You don't HAVE to roll balls unless the yarn comes in a hank -- one of those big loops -- just pull the yarn from the center (fish out the outside end and tuck into the yarn-band so it doesn't get tangled) and you should be fine.

I received a ball winder and swift for my birthday last year. I absolutely love having it, but mostly because I knit a lot of socks out of yarn that doesn't come in balls. I really can't stand winding sock yarn by hand, it takes forever! I never would have shelled out the $$ if I hadn't gotten it as a gift, but I am most grateful!

I have the same winder as the KnitPicks one. I use it all the time. My father made me a beautiful umbrella swift for my birthday two years ago, and I use that for yarn that comes in hanks. I do rewind almost all my yarn on my winder, though, because I really like the little flat-ended cakes it makes. And, it's fun to do

I had an umbrella swift and ball winder under the tree. The ball winder is amazing! Thanks for the feedback, ladies! I'm so thrilled with it!
