One of my sons wants a fleece blanket for Christmas - I really want to try and make one for him - but I am not a sewing expert. (however I do not want to do the new sew tie blankets)

I would so appreciate any help on the type of fleece and how to do this. My dd has a sewing machine I can use and I am going to try and go to Joann Fabrics tomorrow.

I was planning on making a 66x90 oversize twin one.

You don't have to sew it at all, really, because it won't ravel. That being said, a nice hem looks "finished" and can be done easily by turning under a half inch and topstitching.Don't stretch it as you sew and you'll have no trouble. Fleece is so easy to work with, and very forgiving. HTH

My dd and her friends have made a ton of fleece blankets for donation and they were no-sew. You can just cut a fringe around the edges. Then knot each fringe, it looks nice. There are so many fabric websites with so many different fleeces, have fun!

how are you planning on making this? the fabric is generally 60" width so you'll have to piece it together to get a 66x90 size.

And honestly.. the best price I've found is buying actual bed blankets and using that for the fleece to make things.

If you want it oversized.. and nice and thick.. I'd go to hmm I believe it's Domestications and get two of their cheaper fleece blankets.. same price regardless of size so I'd get two kings and cut to the size I want and then sew the two together and tie or quilt them (no batting just the double layer of fleece)

edited to make the link right to the blankets

My little 5 year old asked for a fleece blanket for Christmas.   I was going to fringe the edges with TWO blankets and knot them together.

She wants little blue silk bows all over the top. Can you just put them through both blankets with a needle and tie or will it ruin the fleece?

I've never worked with fleece before...
Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions. DD and I do make a lot of the taggie blankets - usually for new babies - and lots of other knotted taggie items. But (for some reason?) I want to sew this blanket - maybe because ds has his baby taggie but I want it to be different. I looked at team fleece - but hard to get the Washington sports teams. I never thought of the size problem Jodie.

I am going to have to think it through a little bit more...
