I need your tried and true, super successful recipes. I have never made colored popcorn balls before and from the reviews I have read of some recipes, they either really work or they really fail. We are trying to make purple ones so I think that recipes with purple gelatin would probably be better than trying to combine red and blue food coloring but I am up for anything that works.

This sounds so neat...I'm hoping someone out there does this...I'd love to know what you do!
Are you just making them as an Advent treat, Charlotte? Or is there another theme you're going for?
What a fun idea! Anyone?????

I have never made them, but my cousin's German grandmother used to make them for us every Halloween...and I loved it. I did see a cute idea in the December Family Fun where they took plain store bought ones and decorated them like ornaments with frosting and sprinkles and candies...maybe that would work if you don't find a tried and true recipe?

My mother in law makes great popcorn balls, but not colored ones. I could ask her for her recipe and suggestions for coloring. Or, you could maybe do what Colleen suggested and decorate them with purple sprinkles/candies?

I think I am just going to try one of the recipes I found. This idea developed out of my youngest girl's handwriting book. She had to write "popping purple popcorn" and then they suggested making purple popcorn so I thought it would be a fun Advent activity and if they turned out, we might make them and hang them on our Advent Tree. That's just how my manic brain works!

My kids keeping asking about popcorn balls -- I make some awesome carmel popcorn but have shied away from balls as it just sounds so "touch and go" as far as if the popcorn mixture is too hot you get hurt, but if it's too cold you don't have balls ....
Any advice ...

Oh Mary G.,
Keep on shying! We did make some tonight. We used a marshmallow/gelatin recipe. And then because the color of the gelatin was very light, we rolled them in a combination of blue and pink sugar crystals. Ugh! They were horrible...so bad they were almost good like something you would eat at a ballpark. The kids didn't care for the taste of the gelatin covering the popcorn and the sugar crystals were a dentist's delight!
Anyway, they looked gorgeous but nobody wanted to finish theirs. Good in theory, not in practice.
