Has anyone done this before? I'm not sure how best to do it or if it is really possible. I assumed it was just papier mache, and we could do the old blow up a balloon one, but looking they seem to made of tissue paper and in complex shapes.
Any tips?

Oh yes!
Years ago there was a great issue of Martha Stewart magazine that walked you through the whole process and gave ideas for different shapes.
You could blow up a balloon and papier mache over that - I think I might have done 2 layers for a pinata. Let that dry cut out your flap for goodies and then decorate however you want - it is very easy to make a large rose (thinking how nice that would be for Our Lady of Gaudalupe!)
Other ideas for a round balloon shape would be a fish or a planet, a golden ball, a bee (I felt a little bad about whacking a bee)....I haven't done more complicated shapes but the rose really comes out looking impressive - if you need more info I could see if I can find that particular issue.

There is a simple pinata linked with the papel cortado here.
We've never made one before - they are abundant here - but maybe we will for Our Lady of Guadalupe this year. We're on a minor craft making roll here.

I never had luck with the papier mache. But we have made good ones by using a brown paper grocery bag (or bags) and then using glue/flour/water to paint over it. (skipping the newspaper layering step).
The "fancy" pinatas just have strips of crepe paper stuck on it.
The Duggars had one on their show the other night, it was a robot made out of cardboard boxes - I imagine oatmeal cartons, etc. would work well as a base.

oh, by the way, I liked the simplicity of the paper bag pinata. But the instructions call for a paper lunch bag - we don't have such things. COuld anyone tell me what sort of size one is, and if there is anything special about them? Thanks

It's a small paper sack, squared bottom, nothing special - dimensions 10 1/2 in. X 5 in. X 3 in. I was looking on-line to see if I could find a template in case you would need to make one, but not finding it. I'll look again later.

The way I made one last week (and for a number of years) is so easy. I use a 10kg paper flour sack. Then I cut strips of construction paper and curl up the bottom edges and staple it on in a layering type way, bottom to top. I put a bunch of candy in and tie a string on top. Takes and hour tops and no mess.
Last time we decided to cut the outer part of the paper bag into strips from top to bottom, leaving the bottom intact. We then we left the strips hanging and put a big squid face on and little suckers (just round pieces of construction paper) stapled to the strips and we had a great squid (or octopus) pinata.
I am sure you could also use a smaller bag...

Lucy - I haven't found the old magazine yet but....I'll try tell you what I can about a making rose.
I know I used a larger round punching bag sort of balloon as my basic form - papier mache over that with newspaper - let dry. Make sure you put in some kind of hanger while your doing the base layers - I use floral wire and I have reinforced it with masking tape in the past.
You take large sheets of tissue paper to make the petals. You are basically making a long series of arcs - start with a height of maybe 4-5 inches - leaving the bottom two inches uncut. For the center I would loosely roll up a section of arcs and glue it to the center of the form (you can continue to use papier mache glue). Then you just keep gluing these rows of arcs onto to form around the starting point.
As you move away from the center the arcs gradually get taller and wider so that you have the largest petals on the outside just like a real rose.
As you glue - you'll be using that uncut two inch base - you can slightly scrunch this portion as you glue - think how petals are narrower where they meet the base of the flower and wider at the top of the petal.
Does this make any sense?? 
Maybe I'll just have to make one and post it!
