I saw this idea on another message board and thought it would be fun to try out here. So here is todays secret ingredient........APPLES
If you were on Iron Chef what would you make with APPLES?
Here is my recipe
Naomi's Serious Apple Crisp
Preheat 375
6 cups of tart and sweet apples, peeled and sliced
1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1 cup (scant) sugar
1 tsp fresh gound cinnamon
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp freshly grated nutmeg
1 egg
1/2 cup butter, melted (unsalted)
1/2 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped
Line a buttered 9-inch baking dish with apple slices. Sift dry ingredients together; work in egg with pastry blender until consistency of coarse meal. Sprinkle over top of apple slices. Drizzle melted butter over top. Sprinkle with chopped nuts. Bake at 375 for 45 minutes or until browning on top.
This is one of our favorite fall desserts.
Feel free to link to your blog if you have a yummy apple recipe there.

My kids have been begging for applesauce so that would be mine. I think I would have to come up with a pretty snappy presentation--bowls and spoons carved from apples?--to make Iron Chef.

Well there is apple butter cooking in my crockpot, so I guess that. Not likely to win iron chef.
Or, last night I made pork roast with onions and apples.

breakfast apple crisp
put lots of sliced apples in a pan.. sprinkle with lemon and cinnamon.. sugar if you wish.
make topping with
2 c. rolled oats
1/4 c. flour
3/4 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. softened butter
cut butter into sugar and flour.. stir in oats..
top apples and bake at 375* until crisp is slightly browned and apples are tender.
but that's just on my mind because we had it this morning.. but that, apple pie and applesauce as the things we like best made out of apples.

Apple Cake
Wins everybody over, every time!
Well, maybe not as popular as my chocolate bourbon pecan pie . . . but the apple cake is healthier :)
Ingredients:
1 3/4 cups sugar, divided
1/2 c stick margarine or butter, softened
1 t vanilla extract
6 oz block-style, fat-free cream cheese, softened
2 large eggs
1 1/2 c flour
1 1/2 t baking powder
1/4 t salt
3 t cinnamon
3 c chopped, peeled Rome apples (2 large)
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350
Beat 1 1/2 c sugar, margarine, vanilla, cream cheese at med speed until well-blended.
Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each.
Combine flour, baking powder, salt. Add flour mixture to creamed mixture, beating at low speed until blended.
Combine 1/4 c sugar and cinnamon. Combine 2T cinnamon mixture and apple in bowl. Stir apple mixture into batter.
Pour batter into 8" springform pan coated with cooking spray. Sprinkle with remaining cinnamon sugar.
Bake at 350 for one hour to one hour, 15 minutes.
Cut with serrated knife after cooling on wire rack.
Serves 12

Iron Chef conjured images in this nerdy homeschooling mom's mind of a spoofy cooking show where you experiment with the wonders of an iron to cook more than grilled cheese????
So, yeah.... I too join the ranks of: "What's an Iron Chef?"

Iron Chef is a cooking show on Cable (Food Network). I think the original show was from Japan when it started playing. You would hear English talking over the Japanese. Since then Food Network has its own Iron Chef.
Two chefs compete against each other. A theme of food is given right at the beginning, and shown live, timed, the chefs and helpers create a meal incorporating that food theme.
Does that help?
Apple Cake I just love. I have this one recipe to die for, but I haven't made it years. I think I need to pull it out and make it for my hubby.

Jenn,
I think you need to pull it out and post it here after you make it for your hubby.
(please)

Just curiousity questions:
Why Iron? Does it have to be in a pan? Or since it's a competition, is it supposed to be like Iron Man?

Well, my guess would have been like Iron Man, the strongest chef. But...
Wikipedia has a history of the show. It doesn't really give a reason for the name, but it seems the Iron Chef is the resident champion chef pitted against newcomers every week.
Anyone else agree with that?

Pork Roast With Apple and Apricot Risotto
Just make sure you are sure it's a pork roast—rather than lamb! You need some good salty crackling to really set off the apples:-)

Sorry to be the voice of dissent, gals, but I cannot stand that show. (I think I overdosed on cooking shows the first 10 years of marriage that's why I hardly watch any these days -- only in hotels when we're traveling.)
But to answer the original question...
IIRC the thing with Iron Chef is to take one ingredient and put it in different courses
Maybe start out with an apple gaufrettes paired with a light ginger dip for appetizers
then an apple and squash soup flavored with chipotle and topped with caramelized onions
then pork tenderloin slow-braised in apple cider, with a mixed green salad dressed with an apple cider vinaigrette
finish up with an apple sorbet, topped with a dehydrated apple chip .... or maybe 3 bite-sized apple tarts with a drizzling of maple-apple-caramel-syrup
with all my little assistants I should be able to complete those in oh... 4 hours? heee...
and the whole family will not be able to eat apples until next year when apple season is back.

I have a great crockpot recipe for pork chops with an apple, Calvados and cream sauce. Mega-yum!
BTW, dd LOVES Iron Chef!

With that being said, I now feel like a nerd for knowing what the show is....even though I don't watch it.....much.
