Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a few questions on teaching crochet for little ones. I'm a crocheter since I was 11. I gravitated early on to thread crochet (doilies and such). My niece who is turning 7 has learned to finger crochet and LOVES it. I'm trying to inspire her to move on, but had a few questions.

First, where do you find instructions on finger crochet? I keep seeing or hearing about it.

Next, how does one graduate from finger crochet to crocheting with a hook? Any pointers?

The book I'm giving her is the Klutz Crochet and Mary Frances Knitting and Crochet.

Do you have any other suggestions or helpful hints?

Thanks in advance!

isn't that just making a chain by making your loop large and pulling it through with your fingers? can't do anything except chain.

umm stick a hook in their hand? I don't know.. I've never tried to incorporate the finger crochet with the other and I think growing up I learned crochet with a hook before I learned finger.

again.. I don't know.. I just have taught the kids to chain and when they can do that move onto doing other stitches.. but no particular progression of stitches. I've mainly done granny squares with them.. if you just keep going around you can fairly quickly make a single square large enough for a doll blanket which gives them something that they've been able to get finished. No one has really had a desire to stick with it longer or do anything that takes very long to finish.. with winter coming up we may pick it up again.

I haven't, but learned as a small child, ~8. My mom taught me to use a crochet hook right away.

I gave my daughter, age 7, a hook and showed her and she took off with it. She isn't all that coordinated, yet she picked it up very easily. Although, we have only done single crochet, nothing fancy yet.

Jenn - Abby has been crocheting since she was 7. I will ask her for info. She never did finger crochet - did the hook straight - with very little help from me. She has a lot of resources - i will ask her to list them.

I just started teaching my dd (almost 7) to crochet, but we are at the very beginning stages. I just gave her a big fat hook and we are making a washcloth to start. At this point, I still have to sit right with her and help with each stitch.

I had originally intended to teach her to knit this year, but I still haven't figured out how to do it myself , and she is a perfectionist, so I thought when the yarn falls off the needles, we may have meltdowns . Crochet is a bit easier to "fix", in my opinion.

I don't have any resources to recommend yet- we're just starting, too! I actually hadn't thought of finger crochet- good idea. Maybe we'll give that a go later today, so she gets the rhythm of it (and I don't have to sit with her the whole while).

I'll be in touch as we go, Jennifer!
