Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I would like to learn how to sew with a sewing machine (I do things by hand now) and would love some advice on where to start.

Any books you would recommend?

Any machines that are good for starting out? Is it better to pay a little more or are all machines (assuming they have similar functions) basically the same?

Any MUST haves to get started on the right foot?

Any tips on setting up a sewing space in your home? I have a space currently dedicated to the computer that I can rework a little to include a sewing set-up.

Thanks in advance.

don't get a cheap machine. if you know you'll sew a lot it's worth it to get a machine with metal parts but I'm not sure which those are at this time. I think Janome is one? maybe..

but even of those with plastic parts you want to get one that is easy to thread and holds tension decently and such so get a reliable name. I think this would be the low end singers? for instance.

The last thing you want as a beginner is a machine that makes it HARDER to sew.
