Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have two lengths of corduroy that I would like to sew up into The 5 Minute Skirt from Angry Chicken. Have any of you used corduroy for a fuller skirt before? I have only ever had corduroy skirts in a straight style. Will this work? Neither is very heavy fabric, just a light corduroy. Wadaya think?

Blessings,
Bets

Well, that skirt that you linked to is cut on the bias (diagonally) which means your cords would be diagonal too. I think it would look odd. Also, even a thin corduroy has a fairly substantial hand to it (i.e. it doesn't drape easily) so the skirt may come out as too stiff.

If you like the idea of an A-line skirt, you'd at the very least need to shift it from a bias cut to a straight cut when you lay out your fabric. In general, I think you may be better off getting a pattern that is intended for a sturdier fabric.

Sorry, not what you want to hear I'm sure. Good luck!

yes.. go with a gored skirt so that it's gathered as little as possible and do not cut on the bias with corduroy. Also watch your nap (if you run your hand one way over the fabric, it will look different than the other so you want to be sure that the "top" of your fabric is always the "top".

But other than those two things.. with a light cord.. that you make with gores (wedges) you should be able to make the tops of the gores so that they will just slide over your hips with an elastic waist.

If you don't want to do gores.. you might do better with limited fabric not to.. you might try pleating the top rather than gathering it for a slimmer look to a fuller skirt.

With either of these options you can do an elastic waist.. just use a waistband rather than folding over the top of the fabric. And make it only big enough to just slide over your hips stretched out as much as you can.. so that there's little in the way of gathering with the elastic.
