We cleaned out my father's house last weekend.
I have my mom's wedding dress and would like to somehow make a gift to each of my siblings.
There are 6 of us, all but my unmarried sister have children and there will probably be no more grandchildren for my father.
Any ideas about what to do with the dress? It is pretty simple, satin-y,with a few lace sections. A Christining blanket for the next generation, something for my mother's granddaughters to have at their weddings? but what about the ones who do not marry and what about the boys--5 of them for each family to use--but what about my unmarried sister?
Any thoughts about anything you have seen?
Viv

Viv,
Your post caught my eye. In mid August, my mil sent her wedding dress to be cleaned for the first time in 43 years. When my fil died suddenly on Sept 8th, a friend made a pine coffin for him and used her wedding dress to line the coffin and make a pillow (my in-laws only have sons).
It was beautiful.
I love your ideas for a Christening blanket or something for a wedding.
For males or unmarried sister, you could probably use some of the dress to line a memory box? Or make it a prayer box for holy cards to go? The outside could be wood or some sort of masculine exterior.
Just an idea.

Oh Maryan,
That is the loveliest possible use of your mother-in-law's wedding gown. What a beautiful gift.
Blessings,

I have a friend that her and her daughters made her oldest's wedding gown and the bridesmaids dresses etc. And she made some of these out of the extra fabric.. but it might be something you could make from the gown itself that would be appropriate for anyone to own regardless of age, sex, marital status

What a beautiful idea...I wish I had thought of saving mine to make something out of it...I just thought, well, there's no way my daughter will ever want to wear it, so I donated it. I did save my veil, though, so maybe she can use that.
What a beautiful way to use a keepsake like that, Maryan!

Lori, I don't know how old your daughter might be.. but I used some of the same fabric we used to make my wedding veil to make my daughters' veil for their first communion. (it's just a bit of veil attached only on the back of a circlet of flowers)

And my sister refitted and modified my mom's wedding dress (it was not a long dress) into a first communion dress for her daughters.

My niece has asked me to use part of her wedding gown to make the baby's christening gown, then maybe part will be used for First Holy Communion, also.
The casket lining...what a beautiful story. Thanks for sharing that.

I wish I could get dh's Grandma to give up my MIL's wedding dress for my girls. MIL died from breast cancer 6 weeks after we married. I wanted to take her dress and use it to make first communion veils for my 4 daughters, but Grandma In Law is so stuck in the past no one will even ask her!
Is there any way to make a small shadow box with a piece of the dress for everyone? Maybe embroider her name on it or something?

Along the shadow box idea...perhaps a collage with your parents' wedding picture, a portion of the dress, along with other family photos or keepsakes. My dil was given a lovely shadowbox with a collage of wedding pictures, dried flowers and their wedding invitation...a beautiful reminder.

Thank you all for yout ideas.
After cleaning out a 40 yard dumpster's worth of stuff at my father's house, giving more "stuff" is a sensitive issue. My parent's marriage was a difficult one and collages/shadowboxes may not be appreciated by my siblings. BTW, when my time comes to be a MIL, I hope I have the cretivity to make a beautiful momento for my daughters.
Will probably do Christining blankets(Communions are all done too) and maybe a pillow for my sister.
AND since I salvaged the dress I will probably keep some of the petticoats and sew a few pieces into all my neices and daughters wedding dresses.
