Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'd like to begin teaching my 8yo dd to sew this year. I myself do not enjoy sewing or consider myself proficient. What books/resources do you suggest?

I used I'll Teach Myself Sewing Machine Fun with another daughter years ago, and I think it was pretty good. Any other ideas?

Thank you!

Barbara, a friend of mine was in the same situation a few years back. Because she herself was not a sewer she found a lovely retired lady who was willing to teach her two daughters one morning per week. This proved a blessing for the girls and for the teacher!
Do you have older women in your parish who may like to feel useful again by teaching your little girl to sew?? You could ask around - you never know the blessings that may come from such an arrangement.

Hi Barbara,

How about 4-H? That is where my dds learned to sew. We had a great group and most of the kids were homeschooled too!

The best book for teaching sewing is Alice Cantrell's Sewing with St. Anne -- from hand-sewing to machine and the projects are fun and cute!

I did this very thing with retired neighbour. I can't tell you how good it was for my daughters and for my neighbour! The neighbour was thrilled to have my girls (5 and 7 year olds) come over and learn to sew. My girls love to sew and their skills are really remarkable. My neighbour was amazed at how much they learned in one year. I'm so glad my children picked up on her enthusiasm for sewing. I'm afraid if I would have tried to teach them, they would have really picked up on my fear (of the sewing machine) and general frustration with all things needle and thread related LOL] !!

I used Stitches and Pins by JoAnn Gagnon last year with all my kids. It is very easy to use and the explanations are quite clear. I also love "Sewing with St. Anne," but the format of "Stitches and Pins" is a little easier for the complete novice. "Sewing with St. Anne" has proved to be an invaluable reference tool and I am so glad I have both.
