Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am thinking of purchasing some hotel sheets and towels in bulk online. Seems like it might be cheaper overall than waiting for a white sale. Whaddya think? Has anyone ever done this, and if so, could you recommend a particular web site (there are quite a few, I've discovererd)? In particular, I want a good quality towel. I am sick of cheap towels that push water around rather than soak it up.

I'm also reading in Home Comforts (see Elizabeth's blog for more info about this book) about the importance of mattress covers and pillow covers (its a fabulous book, btw). Can anyone recommend a particular brand? Dh hates the cheap ones at Walmart/Target that hold air and sound weird when you put your head on the pillow.

I have never even heard of buying sheets like that. huh! Now I must go and look

...and I have to be honest, I hate mattress covers. My Mom always used them. They drive me crazy. I have them, in the linen closet. sigh...maybe I should go read Elizabeth's blog to find out why I should use them. My Mom says I should too......

I know the quality of the cover really matters...I am just not sure how much is reasonable to pay for such a thing. We have used the cheaper ones in the past and are not pleased with them.

Laura, the sheets/towels thing is interesting to me. It looks like they have to be purchased by the dozen, but it looks like they are a deal for the quality...I'm still thinking about it all...

I don't know about the bulk towels, etc. but it seems like a good idea.

I do, however, know about mattress pads and pillow protectors. Two words, Lands' End. They have the absolute best mattress pads, especially the waterproof pads. If you have small children who occasionally deposit bodily fluids in the bed, they are a must-have. You cannot tell they are waterproof, they totally protect the mattress and save it from potentially stinky disaster. Yes, a good mattress pad is expensive, but a new mattress is VERY expensive. What would you do if you didn't have a mattress pad and the stomach flu of the century roared through your house, and you could never get the smell out of your mattress afterward?! Think of the mattress pad as insurance for your mattress investment.

As far as pillow protectors go, we use them on the nice king-sized pillows on my bed, and the pillows on my allergy-prone dd's bed. I admit we don't use them on the boys' pillows. I just wash the pillows when they need it and replace them every so often with new ones.

I really love Lands End and shop their overstocks often. The Home Comforts book talks about bed mites or some kind of disgusting microbe that feeds off our dead skin cells and then excretes so much that by the time a person has used a mattress for 10 yrs, it weighs something like an extra 10 lbs. Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo gross! So I am looking for a pad that will keep this down, which means it has to be non permeable for the microbes. Apparently there are non permeable ones that are still soft and comfy, but I don't know where to begin and what is a good price...

This protector is like what we use. We have one on the box springs in my dd's room, too. Frequently washing of linens and mattress pad in hot water will keep dust mites down, as well. Maybe that would reduce the dust mite excretions by a 1/2 pound a year or so!    It is very gross.

I've always had a mattress cover. I think I've had a phobia of the gross dustmite excretions since my dad informed me of that when I was a kid.

We recently bought a new bed from our very reliable, regional mattress/bed retailer and they highly recommend the mattress covers like the Protect-a-bed.   This is the one they sell. Sleep country is the retailer.

It has a waterproof (very imp!) yet breathable layer on bottom, with an absorbant, terry cloth layer on top. It is SO THIN, so I can fit it in my washing machine. I used to have to go to the laundry mat to wash our mattress cover for our KING.    It's not hot to sleep on. We LOVE it. It's WAY better than the standard matrress pads. Made in Spain.

Susanne, I was wondering about the waterproof layer thing...some of the sites advertise cotton that has been treated to protect and I wasn't sure if the poly layer was necessary. The link you provided has ones that work on deeper mattresses, too, which is a necessity for us.

Do you use the pillow covers, too, and if so, do they hold air and sounds weird next to your ear?

I think the ones that are "treated to protect" are waterproof only to a certain extent. Perhaps for adults. But when you have kids climbing into bed, with lots of possible leaking and bodily fluids all over the place I definitely want a true waterproof layer. In he past, I didn't want the non-breathable aspect of them, TOO HOT! So I would always put a moveable, waterproof pad down under the kids....but that's a hassle and not always very accurate. But, now there's a true-waterproof and breathable pad!!

I don't. We mainly use 2 pillowcase covers with the very cheap pillows. And, then get new pillows every year.

This has been my strategy in the past, and its not the most effective. I was just having a hard time believing that it could be both breathable and waterproof, but if it doesn't feel yuccky and hot, then ! Thanks, Suzanne.
