i have a lot of baby clothes with spit up stains. My mother had once given me a "recipe" that called for soaking them in very hot water, with a couple different cleansers, but of course I can't find the recipe now. It did work very well.
apart from bleach, do you have any suggestions?

Oxy-clean, detergent and water worked the best on the last batch I did for the baby. I find that oxy-clean works as a detergent supporter better than alone.

zout works great for spraying directly onto spots.. I couldn't ever see that oxiclean did anything plain detergent didn't do.. but I've also noticed that different water types do better with different cleaners.

will oxi-clean work on old stains? I have some nice baby clothes to donate BUT some have spit up stains that I was never able to get out.

Sometimes they take a good long soaking. And I mean a few days' soaking with Oxyclean and detergent. I soak them in a bucket and have never been disappointed.

I use this recipe, which I got from a lady who preserved antique linens and garments, including christening gowns:
1 part clorox 2 *powder*
1 part ivory dish liquid
Mis carefully together in a non-metal container (it heats right up!), and spoon onto stains. Allow to sit for at least 20 minutes, then wash in the hottest cycle with remainder of mixture. Hang out in the sun to dry.
I have done entire batches of baby clothes for new babes this way. You can also soak the clothes in a sink full of superhot water and this mixture. But if you do this by hand, wear gloves. It has taken off spit-up stains and poop stains. Just another laundry tip: if you have a greasy stain (a friend melted a chapstick in her denim skirt pocket), use fels naphtha soap. It's fantastic.
You can also try using a combination of borax and castile flakes for your baby load; but you'll want to liquify the castile first with hot water.
