Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I don't know if anyone else is familiar with this programbut if there is one near you, it is a great way to save on groceries. Between this and buying our meat in bulk from local farmers and ordering toiletries from amazon, we have almost completed eliminated grocery shopping...and made our grocery budget constant from month to month.

Colleen, I have looked into it before, there is a host site just down the street. Is the quality of food pretty good? How long does it usually last your family?

SHARE looks to be a similar program in Florida. I have friends who use it but I don't want to drive that far to the nearest host site (100 miles to Upper Keys) that gas money will buy alot of groceries! I think SHARE has divisions in lots of states, try a search for SHARE + your state if you are interested.

we've used SHARE and Angel Food. Share is 1/4 mile away and Angel Food about 3 mi. I was happier with SHARE food, the Angel Food seemed a quality lower...
I was thinking I need to get back into both of them. It jsut takes another step then stopping by the store, kwim? and if I don;t get it on the calendar to call and sign up than I miss it for the month...

Here's info on Share from the DC page:
Quote:

SHARE (Self Help And Resource Exchange) was formed in 1983 in San Diego, California by Deacon Carl Shelton and the Catholic Diocese. Deacon Shelton believed it was possible to implement a self-help approach to meeting the food needs in interested communities.

SHARE-DC was launched in April, 1990 by Associated Catholic Charities and the Knights of Malta. SHARE-DC serves communities in Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

SHARE-DC is an affiliate of World SHARE. One of the fundamental values of World SHARE is that it is considered a basic human right for all people to have adequate access to food, water, shelter, material assistance, human relationships, spiritual expression, physical safety, good health, education, and an environment conducive to their well-being. A second and equally compelling fundamental value embodied by World SHARE is that each individual has a vital contribution to make to the world. Together with 17 SHARE affiliates across the United States and programs in Guatemala and Mexico, SHARE-DC strives to help people make a difference for themselves and their neighbors.

I had looked into it in Denver, but we were moving and never did it. Here in the DC area you also have to give a certain number of volunteer hours per package ordered (2 hrs/package) -- not too much to ask. It's cool that it was started by Catholic charities ... but for all people (not just poor families on food stamps).

Angel Food Ministries doesn't have the volunteer component but also is open to all -- if you eat, you can use the service.

Sounds like something this always-hungry-family-who-works-for-the-Catholic-church could certainly get much benefit from!

Do you use it only in times of crisis or for every month shopping?

Leah, I am under the impression that Angel Food is for everyone at anytime. We are not in crisis, but it would sure help with the budget around here. I'm looking at it for lunches for me and the kids, as I don't think it's enough food for our size family for dinner - although I think you can purchase two.

I just ordered from Angel Food Ministries for the July pick-up. I got enough for two weeks for our family. We haven't done this before, so we are only jumping in halfway! I am not sure about eating the same menu four weeks in a row.

I'll report back in a month! Thanks for the tip!

I also wanted to mention that it has been about 2 years since I used either program, so Angel Food could have improved..
I DO like that SHARE has a Catholic founding, I know that here, ours is operated/was founded by Catholics as well...

Wow - this sounds great. Mary G - thanks for the DC/VA link. I just have to figure out whether we can do it with food allergies. I will have to let some of my "organic" ideas go too - but these are disappearing anyway as the cost of living is just getting so high.

With SHARE do you have to commit to a certain period?

Lisa--I too use most of the Angel Food food for lunches and some quick dinners. I order two boxes for the month and added on the fruit/veggie bonus. That gives us almost all of our lunches, a few dinners, and lots of midmorning snacks. It is a lot of pre-processed food, and everything in me would prefer to dish out organc chicken breasts rolled in wheat germ instead of frozen nuggets, but neither the budget nor the schedule will allow it. Dh is beginning a new job (also working for the church) and will be gone much more often, including a couple of evenings a week. This food is perfect when it's just the kids and I, and I can save my nicer menu items for when he's home. We figure we're gettng about $150 worth of food for $75. That's a bargain anyway you look at it.
PS__This is a great gift idea for a family with a new baby! $30 worth of easy meals!
