My old one is spitting brown water and the plate is scratched and nicked beyond recognition. Any recommendations?

Nope. We still have the same iron we had when we got married, I think. I wouldn't know--DH is the only one who ever uses it!

I have a I bought at Black and Decker ClassicWalmart. I like it because it's sturdy, and I prefer it to the lightweight ones. One suggestion I have, though, is to use a spray water bottle instead of putting water into your iron. Every iron I've ever had that I put water into, eventually spewed brown water. I now just spray the garment with water from a spray bottle and my iron lasts much longer.

That is an excellent idea. I would have tried to run the old one through a cleaning cycle of vinegar and water if it hadn't been for the scratches and scrapes in the coating on the underside. You would have thought we had been ironing knives looking at the bottom of that thing!

The added plus to ironing with water in a spray bottle is that you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil and make a lovely ironing spray that steams up and scents your whole room...HT: ELizabeth.

 OK...I am sold and so is Husband on using the spray bottle but the one feature from our old one that he really liked was the retractable cord. He says that he liked knowing that there wasn't any chance of one of the kids tripping on or pulling on the cord and getting burned. That narrows down the ones I can choose from.
For the ladies who use spray bottles of water, do you just set the iron setting to "no steam"? Does it also work if you are using starch? (He likes a light starch on his dress shirts.) Thanks for all the help!

Rowenta is the best iron that we've found (all my siblings seem to own one). You don't need the upscale one. There is a retractable cord one.
If your iron is spitting spots, it might still do it even if cleaned.
Starch does seem to adhere to the coverplate. Have you used the iron cleaner you can find at fabric stores?

The iron is actually pretty clean on the outside.
I looked at some Rowenta's at Target today and they were all in a much higher price range than I was looking to spend. I might have been able to find one for less elsewhere, but I really needed to replace it before morning. I ended up getting a Black and Decker that had the retractable cord with the coated plate because Husband said he liked that kind and since he uses it more than I do, I couldn't refuse!

I also like the Rowenta,we bought it at Costco.Another good thing about it is that it's NOT made in China.
