Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The house we are renting is really nice - except I am not impressed with the dishwasher. It just does NOT work as well as what I would like. It just isn't getting things clean the way it should, and even when I ran it with basically clean items (just came out of boxes so I wanted to run them) there was "gunk" on the top indents of the cups. Ick.

I could try to have them replace it, but since it isn't "technically" broken I don't know if they will, or how long it will take in any case.

It has been eons since I hand-washed dishes (I'm a wimp! I know it!!!) I am ready to go and buy all plastic utensils and paper plates. kidding.

Do you have a dishwasher?

no dishwasher here.. but I have so little space that I just can't give up the space to put one in.

But it sounds like perhaps the dishwasher has some sort of filter or something in it that needs to be cleaned out.. where else would gunk come from? And that perhaps once that's done it won't be a problem.

Not anymore. It broke a while ago and we have decided not to get it fixed. I really enjoy washing dishes by hand.

Yes, I have a d/w. And it's been my experience with various dishwashers that you need to prerinse dishes before putting them into the d/w. Make sure to remove all the loose food particles.

I know there are the brands that say no rinsing, but most do need some rinsing. The food gets caught up in the drain in the washer. And also check the heat temperature of your water at the water heater to help things along.

We have three dishwashers. They are 46, 9 and 6 years old, respectively. They can dry, too.

I just got one last year. Finally. It is just a very basic model, but I have to say it is a joy for myself and my children after so many years of hand washing.
But...our new house in Fairbanks does not have one, so it will be back to hand washing for a while at least until we can afford to get one. Dang it!

I have one after 12 yrs of not having one. And let me tell you, it saves me SO much time! And counter space! It was one of my least-liked chores, so I was very glad to move to a new home that had a d/w in it already...whew.

Its an older model, but it still works pretty well.

I ditto the "check the filter" for gunk. That would help.

We love ours, for sure. When we first moved back to NC after the Navy, we were in a very small, low-end rental house in the country. And we had mice! I was VERY pregnant and had to wash down the kitchen counters, dishes, etc. every day for a while until the mouse problem subsided. I was the MOST HAPPY person ever when we moved into our next home and had a decent dishwasher (and NO MICE!). Trying to wash dishes all the time when I had to stand side-ways b/c of big pregnant belly was no fun at all...

Dishwashers also have a thing in the bottom that chops up the residue/particles for going down the drain. If that is messed up you could have lots of residue on dishes. I messed ours up many a time at our old house...

No dishwasher here . It's a sad, sad thing. I can't WAIT to have a dishwasher again (if only for a place to hide the dirty dishes!!)

Took me a second - first thought was, "Three? What do they need three for?"

Even if your landlord isn't willing to replace the dishwasher, you should let them know it's not getting things clean. They may pay at least for a repairman to look at it. Brand new dishes shouldn't get gunk on them from a trip through the dishwasher!

We've had a dw, in various houses, for the last 18 yrs but we just bought an older house last fall that doesn't have one, so the kids have learned to wash dishes! We do plan to get one but have to have the elec and plumbing added and a cabinet removed, and we're doing some basement remodeling first, so that's on the back burner for now.

I've had several different models of dishwashers and some work far better than others, even brand new (I got a new Maytag years ago and ended up replacing it with a Whirlpool, my fave brand, a year later) - some really will let you put in non-rinsed dishes with food on them and still get it completely clean.

Last week a neigbhor had a dishwasher sitting out on the curb with a FREE sign on it. If I had known some of you don't have one, I would have grabbed it for ya.

Honestly, I think I have lived in houses with dishwashers since I was ten. I truly could not imagine life without one. I hate washing dishes.

I don't mind washing dishes, we do have a dishwasher, but we end up washing some by hand to keep up with plates. (I need more.)

My friend, who has 17 children, went for YEARS without a dishwasher.

I love washing dishes, I just hate drying and putting them away. If I have the time, I like playing in the water and suds.

But Mary Chris, I'm like you. I've always had a d/w since I was about 10. We even used the kind that you roll up and connect with a hose to the faucet. Even living off campus in old houses we had d/w. Even if they don't work, they are a great place for the dirty dishes to hide, and the clean dishes to dry off.

Yahoo, I do! :) 19 years married and we got a REAL dishwasher when we moved into our own house last summer. I must confess, though, that my kids did nearly all the dishes (as part of our jobs-for-pocketmoney scheme) for the past 10 years or so, so it's really THEY who were cheering. *grins*

But I've done my share!

My MIL had 13 dc--and no d/w for a long long long time (until most of them were grown and gone). They would have one or two washing, and one or two drying, and so they got thru them quickly.

Of course, we're not supposed to use towels to dry (its best to let them air dry--woohoo), but since she didn't have the space to just let them dry in the sink or on the counter, welllllll, ykwim.

I am SOOOO glad to have a d/w. Its an older one, but it keeps me from having to submerge my hands in hot water three-four times a day. We're probably going to replace it in the spring, with our next tax refund.

WOOHOO!

Rachel
