OK - I know this has been the topic of many a thread. Well I feel like I should be a consumer reporter - the Liz Crenshaw of floor cleaning!! I am still in search of a better way to get those floors clean - in a way that is easy for both me and the children. I am also trying to do it without chemicals or strongly scented products - without blowing my household budget on very expensive cleaners.

After going through several Swivel Sweepers and finding out that the Electrolux Pronto has some inherent problems (I did get my money back) - I am finally trying Shark Cordless Floor Cleaner. The kids use it in the kitchen after each meal - and on floors of our main level at the end of each day. (we have hard flooring everywhere - Pergo, ceramic tile or hardwood). It is easy to empty and seems to be working well.

As for mopping - I do keep Wet Swiffers for emergencies. I have been using the OMop with Murphys Oil Soap(the only scent I like)- but the OMOp is killing my back - despite the ergonomic promises. I am trying this steam mop - it seems a great idea as we do not have to use any kind of cleaner. I have just steam mopped the floors - and it does clean well - I am not convinced that it makes the floors really shining. Has anyone else used a steam mop and have any views?

We use the shark sweeper, but it is older and doesn't have the cool bendy handle :) I mostly use it on the tile but it works on carpet as well. Just runs the battery down pretty quick on the carpet. And we have the shark steam mop. And I love it. No cleaners, washable cloth thing...floor gets clean and doesn't feel sticky or like there is any residue when you are done. But my tile isn't shiny, no matter how I clean it.   I am convinced that it is getting the grout much cleaner that anything we used before. I have been through so many mops and the Swiffer wet jet got the floor clean, but left a film and there was garbage to throw out when you are done. But the mops with strings, sponges, or cloths didn't seem to clean well. So that left rags on my hands and knees and that took a very long time! SO I was thrilled to find that the Shark steamer worked so well for us!

I just used a deck brush, a floor squeegy, warm soapy water and a pair of old towels, but then I don't wash the hard floors every day either.

I'd love to know what people use to clean their wood floors. Ours are dull to no end. Occasionally, we use Murphy's Oil, but someone told me that I wasn't supposed to use it on wood floors (which to me, totally doesn't make sense ). Does anyone have intel on this?

Just to add that I LOVE my Shark steam mop now. The amount of dirt is gets up is incredible (given that my kitchen is wet swiffered every day)It works like a dream on ceramic tile, pergo and wood. And no cleaners and their odors! Or expensive disposable cloths.

I just did all the hard floors in my house - lovely shining clean floors - and very dirty mop cloths which I have thrown in the washing machine!

I am glad you do...I am amazed every time I use mine! But I haven't tried it on the wood...I have been afraid. No problems on any hard floor? Good deal!

Tina.. wood is NOT shiny.. the finish is what makes it shiny.. any oils (including murphy's oil soap) will absorb into unfinished wood and can cause discoloration and not necessarily evenly.

So what you need to know is what type of finish you have on your wood floors.. some wood floors require waxing others have a finish like polyeurathane that doesn't require the amount of maintanance of wax but the finish does need to either be buffed and another layer added before it's down to bare wood or it has to be sanded down to bare wood all over and refinished if the finish gets worn off.

Marilyn,

This contraption sounds wonderful!! How much flooring can it cover at a time (without stopping to replace water?). I have pergo in my kitchen, dining area and school room and I really hate my swiffer wet jet!

Jennifer - depends on which child is mopping!!! One of my guys seems to go through tanks of water. Otherwise - I can do kitchen and 3 bathrooms with one tank, living room and dining room with one tank, mudroom and schoolroom with a third. It is a small tank that the kids can fill a funnel and jug. The whole thing is very light. The only smell is the same one you have when you steam iron.

Oh! I want one! LOL

Do you think you can use the Shark Steamer on hard wood floors?

I have a Shark hardwood floor vacuum. I like it but it is REALLY LOUD. I also don't like having to empty the canister all the time. But it does a good job on the small tasks.
