Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our fridge smells like rotten lettuce. It's smelled that way for weeks and weeks though some days are worse than others. Since the smell started the entire fridge has been emptied, dismantled, and scrubbed. All of the ingredients were checked for mold and rot, wiped down, and replaced. It hasn't helped. Our ice is too nasty to use and some of the ingredients taste like the fridge smell. And we have a very tiny apartment that smells every time we open the refrigerator. Any ideas? Am I missing an obvious potential problem? Baking soda in a dish helps a little.

Do you have an automatic icemaker?

Does this fridge have a drip pan underneath? How does that water smell?

I've heard a dish with coffee absorbs odors. Here are some other tips:

Removing Refrigerator Odors

This one has a note about smell lingers, dripping into the insulation.

We do have an automatic ice maker and dh thinks that the two are related, but I'm not sure why. Do you think this is the cause? It's a very new fridge. I think we are only the second tenants to use it and the smell did not develop until we'd been here for six months. There is a filtered water spigot inside the fridge which I assume also supplies water to the automatic ice maker. We don't use that water every day but we've drawn some of that and it doesn't smell or taste bad. Thanks for all the links--maybe we'll try a thorough cleaning again but it didn't help last time. I don't think there is a drip pan though I just now found the water filter for the first time (it looks fine). Would a drip pan be all the way at the bottom of the fridge? Sorry--dumb question--but we've never owned our appliances!

The refrigerator in our first apartment had a problem smell also. It turned out we didn't know there was a drip pan underneath with some very foul-smelling stagnant water. Once we cleaned it the problem was gone.
Good luck... Also are you definitely sure the fridge is the source of the smell? Once our neighbor's pet mouse found its way into our house and died under the couch. It was really hard to pinpoint where the smell was originating from. Those little guys can really stink!

I had a stink one time in my old house (the fridge was ours, we bought it when we bought the house). This was probably about 7 yrs into our ownership of it (it might have been less).

There was a drain hole in the bottom of the freezer compartment. It was (I believe) the drain for the whole machine. We had to flush it out with HOT water (and I believe some baking soda). We did this two or three times in succession, and never had another problem.

Find out the model of your fridge, and look online for a manual, or a website which might tell you what is wrong. Seriously, that sort of search will give you LOTS of ideas and fixits...
