I need cheap recipes that aren't based on beans.
Any ideas?

What about egg-based dishes? We sometimes make fried rice with brown rice, eggs, peas, etc. Other egg dishes might not be as cheap but it depends on what you are comparing it to. We love quiche and we'll put in whatever cheese and vegetables we have on hand.

P.S. A great book to check out is More With Less by Doris Janzen Longacre. It is a book which was born out of a Mennonite Movement in the 1970 to respond to world hunger. It truly is a wonderful little book, I have used and used it since I convinced my Mom to give me her copy! You might be able to find it at your library to have a look.
The recipes are truly very good, healthy and use ingredients that most people have on hand.

I second more with less. She has some good rice based recipes that are pretty good--rice, tomatoes, cheese, and whatever you have to add. They can also make meat go further so you don't need as much meat per person which saves on cost but you still get the nutrition.

My mum always made spaghetti, egg and cheese - cook spaghetti, drain, melt a knob of butter in the pan, return the pasta with beaten eggs, stir until as cooked as you like, then serve with grated cheese on top. We have this often. Sometimes we add sliced spring onions or chopped garlic at the melting butter stage or add chopped crispy bacon as a garnish. For us, if I was serving two adults and two/three children, I would use 2-3oz pasta each, 2-3 eggs, and however much cheese I felt I could spare.
We also often do mystery fried rice - adding onions, frozen peas, left over veg or meat, herbs, spices, whatever to cooked rice and frying it up, adding shredded omlette or stirring beaten egg in.
My dh doesn't like beans much How can this be? But he will eat more "gourmet" bean dishes - lol - like parmesan pinto burgers, bean burgers etc.
We have More with Less too - for us it is a little too unlike the food we eat and very American for us to feel comfortable with many of the recipes, and many of them produce huge quantities for large families, but I have kept it through all my cooking book culls! One day I may use it more. A larger american family would enjoy it though

Thanks for the links, I'll have a good look.
Um, that would be the More With Less Cookbook that is sitting on my shelf? I'd better go and have a good look! Thanks for the reminder.
Here's some I've come up with:
Roast potatoes with (leftover) toppings
Potato Soup
Greek Lemon soup
Chicken and Dumplings
Pot Pies
Various pasta dishes with not much meat
It's moving into winter here so that's easier than summer, I find.
Thanks for the help!
