Is there a special way to do this?
Also after it is thawed, can I skim some of the cream off the top? This is my first experience with raw milk and the only way we could get it was frozen (the farm we visited had a tour day and by the time I wanted to buy some all the fresh was gone and they just had frozen).

I have set mine jugs in the sink before to thaw. I took them out of the freezer before bed and in the morning they were mostly thawed and still cold. You can also thaw them in the refrigerator but it will take a few days. I think you could still skim the cream off, but it is much better if you just shake it up and drink it REALLY cold !
Blessings,
Betsie

Betsie, Jess, do you have to provide your own containers? There is a local source for raw milk, and I'm trying to get in contact with them...
Do either of you make your own butter? There weren't any local sources when I was in NC (it was illegal to sell for human consumption in NC, but isn't in OK), so I was never able to get any....
I can use all of the pointers I can get. What are ya'll paying per gallon? Or do you just get it in 1/2 gallons?

I'm in FL. We're only allowed to buy it for our pets I order it fresh from a farm a couple of hours away.
I've made butter... or my boys have. We just put cream into a jar and shook like crazy, I poured out the butter milk, then I rinsed the butter in water by spinning it in a Magic Bullet blender a couple of times and added a little salt. YUM! In FL a gallon runs anywhere from $6-$13 and there are usually minimal delivery fees involved for us since it isn't coming from right around the corner.

Well, shoot, I found out the folks who used to sell it no longer do--they got out of the dairy business last fall. DANG IT!
Of course, DH called and talked to them about buying a bred heifer....lol. The DH will have to call my DH tomorrow about it....great. Five dc, 10 acres, 60 chickens, 2 geese, 2 ducks, 2 turkeys, probably at least two pigs...and a milk cow, too.
AND I get to hs the dc. And keep up the house. And make sure the bills get paid. And and and. Sheesh. I'm tired just thinking of it! And, watch out, chances are, I'll get pregnant smack in the middle of the summer (my usual time of "conception") and it will overlap harvest/canning time. UGH. Actually, I rather hope that happens. Cause I'd really like to just have another wee one around. The boys are pulling up, and looking to walk--they've got mouth fulls of teeth, have already had their first big boy haircuts (the end of March, before we left NC), and they are getting so doggone big...sniffle.
Anyway, please pray I can find someone. The folks I talked to today didn't know anyone who sold any to individuals, they all sold it to the Co-op, and aren't legally allowed to sell it to the general public raw....looks like getting our own cow is the only way to go. At least that would help take care of the 8 acres of pasture we've got....lol.
