I thought about entitling this "I hate my freezer"! I have a 7 year old upright Crosley freezer in my garage. I despise it and nearly always have. The gasket only held a tight seal for about 2 years. I can't take good advantage of friends' offers to split half a hog or a side of beef because the thing is always full of ice. When I dig the ice off, it only takes less than a month to build up again, probably because of the gasket problem. We have to shove a heavy metal toolbox in front of it to keep it shut.

I would like some opinions about freezers you have been happy with. I don't think I want a chest freezer. I think I'd lose things in it. Any recommendations? I know it is not a romantic Valentine gift, but I think I could ask for one........ DH is as exasperated as I am.

Tell, tell, if you like your freezer.

I would defiantly stick with the uprights. I have had both, and chest freezers are hard to organize, and a bear to reach when pregnant

I don't recall the brand we have, it is the largest Lowes sold 6 years ago!   Happy shopping!

I agree with Molly on upright for convenience, but chest are more efficient and cheaper. Here's one article for example.

I had one of those old freezers that would ice up regularly.I had to use a hammer and chisel to defrost the thing. What a pain! But since I got it for 10 bucks at a yard sale I couldn't really complain!
Now I have a GE upright and it has worked very well for 3 years now. (Right now it is full of ds's precious salmon and halibut. I would never have trusted that to my old freezer). It wasn't expensive, either. I know this because we wouldn't have been able to afford it if it was!LOL!
I also highly recommend going with an upright. Chest freezers are such a pain. My grandma had one and I have many happy childhood memories of her dangling me by my legs to get something out of the bottom for her!LOL!Oh, the blessings of growing up in an Italian family. LOL!

I've never had an upright but I love my chest freezer. They are easier to cram full because you can just pile stuff and gravity keeps in in there! I've had good luck using some boxes and bags to keep like items together and developing a religious devotion to my freezer inventory posted on or near the freezer.

Thanks everyone, for the good advice. I've ordered one from Sears. It's a frost-free (yay!) upright with the temperature alarm. The alarm cost $40 more, but when I think of how much I'd lose if it got unplugged or left ajar, it would be far more than $40. And it was 10% off on sale, with a rebate for the delivery charge, saving me around $120.

It gets delivered next Tuesday. Thanks so much for the advice. And Theresa, the visual of you dangling over your Grandmother's freezer is a hoot!!!
