I just read this tip in an e-newsletter from Debt-Proof Living a little while back and finally got around to trying it...and it works!
Use a pillow case to cover each blade and trap the dust within the case. Take outside, turn case inside out, and shake off dust. Wash case inside out.
Love,

I'm missing something here, Angie.
Do you cover the blade with the pillowcase and then dust it?
I've always just used my vacuum on them...

Yes, you insert each blade into the pillow case. Once inserted, you close the open end of the case with both hands and slide it the length of the blade. This keeps all the dust inside the pillow case.
We have used a vacuum, but have found it awkward and even dangerous on the fans hanging from our vaulted ceilings. Also, living in the desert, our fans are more of a heavy-duty use item than in other places we have lived, so the dust piles up fast. We've tried other gizmos for cleaning fans, all of which send dust flying around...achoo! Even my favorite ostrich feather dusters just can't tackle these fans well.
Can you tell I have ceiling fan issues, Paula?
Love,

I'd take ceiling fan issues over Mary's no heat issues any day!
So, do you pillowcase-dust one blade at a time, shake the case outside, and then come in and do the next one? I think I could get away with calling that exercise.

Gosh no! Yesterday, I used the same pillowcase to dust 2 really dusty fans - 5 blades each. I did call it exercise, though, because the one fan had collected kitchen grease (our family room and kitchen are open to each other) so I ended up having to use some Dawn detergent to wash those blades. It was really good to get rid of the dust first or I would have had a muddy mess:).
Love,
