Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm ready to take the next step on my journey to cutting family expenses. I am ready to wash and re-use plastic storage baggies. I came across website about how to properly wash them about a month ago but now I can't find it again.

So, for any of you who do this, how do you normally wash out your baggies?
Do you have any special instructions for ones that have contained raw meats?
And do you have a special storage container you use to keep dirty ones until washing time?

Any help is appreciated as always.

I just wash the inside and out with hot soapy water. We have a "special" drying rack that looks like 4 flowers sticking out of round disc. We got it at Miles Kimball or some other grandma catalog. When we need more, we use chopsticks in the utensil holder of the dish rack. Or anything else in there that is long enough.

The only raw meat I put in them is for marinades and I write "marinade only" on them.

The dirty ones sit in a dishpan in the sink with the other dirty dishes until we're ready to handwash.

It's no big deal, really.

I don't re-use the bags that have had raw meat.

I wash the others with hot soapy water and then hang with a clothes pin on a rack hanging over my utility sink. They get washed whenever we do dishes during the day - so I don't really store them anywhere. After clean and dry, they just go back into the drawer.

Freezer bags hold up to washing better than the regular storage bags - it's better in the long run to just make the initial investment in freezer bags with a good coupon or sale.

BTW, my mother hates ziploc bags, so she reuses and washes cereal bag liners. She loves them! I have to admit they are handy to save as well. Just use a clothespin to roll down the top and seal them that way.
