Around here, someone under the age of 18 always seems to be breaking a dish. And we had gotten down to an insufficient number despite using Corelle (which are breakable in our home!!!). I personally hate to eat off of plastic dishes. Well I was lamenting to a friend recently about the my dish situation and wondering whether I should invest in another set of Corelle or just go to paper plates. Both “solutions” were not floating my boat!!! Then my friend gave me a great idea. He suggested buying second hand plates at a thrift shop. It turned out to be a great idea. I got a nearly complete set of dishes for 8 (dinner plates, luncheon plates, bowls, tea cups and saucers) for $4!!! Now I can eat on real plates without worry!!! God is good!!!
Thought I'd pass on this idea for those who might be in the same boat!!!

We did the exact same thing! I actually have a couple of extra sets of plates and bowls (from different sets) that the kids use for breakfast and lunch. They don't match anything else we have, but I don't care if they break them. The real benefit over plastic is that it is teaching them to be careful with glass breakable dishes without the worry. I do need to get some more glasses, as we've had some breakage lately due to cup-training the 2yo.
I am so glad to get rid of the plastic!

Salvation Army is where all of our drinking glasses come from. We all break them, age is not a factor here . Our everyday dishes are Fiesta, and the girls are old enough to handle them carefully, though if they break, very easy to replace. Our "good" china belonged to dh's grandmother, and was grocery store china. It's pretty, but again, if it breaks, not a big deal. I think I just like not having to worry about dishes. It puts too much stress on an already stressed mom!

I do the same thrift store supplementing, cause I hate to use plastic. But I never thought of the enamelware idea Jodie, thanks!!! I love enamelware, and there are so many pretty options. I might have to consider saving up for a pretty set.

I am also saving up for an enamelware set. But I just can't decide on a color!
