Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am having a very hard time organizing our extensive book collection. Right now it more than fills four 3-foot-wide/6.5-feet-high bookshelves. I fully admit that I am a garage-sale book junkie and you will find many books in duplicate or triplicate on our bookshelves. Since I have two the same age, this is not really a problem as they often like to read the same books at the same time. I don't even know where to begin in this organization quest. So I guess my question is, how do you all organize your home-libraries? Thanks so much!

Blessings,
Betsie

category.. I like browsing shelves.. so alphbetical or dewey decimal aren't necessary but I REALLY want to have my kids books together and my religion books together and my parenting books together and my homeschooling books together and dh's plant books together etc etc etc.

I agree about doing it categorically. If I have an author who has contributed to different genres such as C. S. Lewis, then I usually split up the books. Within each category I organize by author. (Except for children's books, which are impossible for me to keep organized with young children.)

You know I like the idea of organizing by author Christina.. but what I found was I was losing smaller books between larger books.. and that I like how it looks if they're more arranged by size.

That is true - it does look a lot better by size. I should mention that even though I arrange my books by author, I don't arrange them alphabetically, I do it by size. So if an author writes a tall book and a small book they get put together, but if authors named Bates, Morgan and Smith all write books with similar sizes then they get placed next to each other.

I have a friend who arranges all her books by color! One shelf of orange/red books, several of blue, black and white, etc. Hers are the nicest looking bookshelves I have ever seen, but I would go crazy trying to find books by the color of the spine!

me too.. though I can certainly see if that's how you remember your books that that would be the way to organize them. I do remember color.. some of the time.

Oh I see.. you just group all the books of one author together.. not that you arrange them by author.. ok that still sounds odd but I understand now

The kids' books are arranged by author, the rest by subject.
